Five fires break out across the city on Thanksgiving, no injuries reported

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to five residential fires which broke out across the city from Sunday evening through Monday morning.

Jets claim forward on waivers, send Harkins to Moose

BANFF — The Winnipeg Jets have claimed a forward off waivers from the Washington Capitals.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, 24, will join the team later this week ahead of Friday’s season opener against the New York Rangers. The Swedish winger made his NHL debut last year, scoring two goals and adding two assists in 23 NHL games. He also had 34 points (16G, 18A) in 44 AHL games.

Washington selected Jonsson-Fjallby in the fifth round in 2016. He’s a speedy, defensive forward known for his work on the penalty kill.

Jets associate coach Scott Arniel was behind the Washington bench as an assistant last year.

The move leaves Winnipeg with 25 skaters on the active roster. They must cut down to 23 by today’s 4 p.m. CT deadline.

In other news, forward Jansen Harkins cleared waivers after being cut by the Jets on Sunday. He’ll report to the Manitoba Moose.
