Bombers fall 40-32 in Vancouver

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fell 40-32 to the B.C. Lions Saturday night at B.C. Place.

The Bombers, who clinched the West Division last week, drop to 14-3 on the season. The Lions, who are in a battle with the Calgary Stampeders for the No. 2-seed in the West, improve to 11-5.

The Bombers sat quarterback Zach Collaros and started second-year pivot Dru Brown in his place. Brown threw two pick-sixes and completed 28-of-39 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bombers are on a bye next week and will then host the Lions in the regular season finale on Oct. 28.

Woman in guarded condition after Sargent and Empress collision

An 81-year-old woman is in hospital in guarded condition after a two-vehicle collision at Sargent Avenue and Empress Street early Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service said officers raced to the intersection at 4:30 a.m., where they found the elderly victim and a 45-year-old man trapped in their damaged car. The pair had to be extricated. The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

The occupants of the other vehicle, a late model, dark-coloured Dodge Caravan, had already ran away from the scene by the time police arrived.

Traffic investigators have discovered that the Dodge Caravan was spotted driving at a high speed before the collision, police said. Investigators ask anyone with information, including dash camera footage of the Dodge prior to the crash, to call the division at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Rifles outlast Wildcats

The Winnipeg Rifles capped their regular season with a 12-8 win over the Edmonton Wildcats at IG Field.

The Rifles (4-4) survived a late push by the Wildcats (0-8), who threatened to score in the game’s dying moments.

The game, although meaningless in the standings for Winnipeg, who had already clinched the fourth seed in the Prairie Conference playoffs, proved to be potentially catastrophic for the Rifles, as starting quarterback Bryson McNeil is feared to be done for the season after suffering an upper-body injury in the second quarter.

The Rifles will face the Regina Thunder (7-0) in the semi-finals on Oct. 23

6:31 PM

Moose shutout IceHogs

The Manitoba Moose captured their first win of the 2022 season with a 4-0 win over the Rockford IceHogs at Canada Life Centre.

After falling to the IceHogs on Saturday in the first game of a back-to-back in Winnipeg, the Moose bounced back thanks to goals from the likes of training camp notables Jansen Harkins and rookie Brad Lambert. Kevin Stenlund and Evan Polei also found the back of the net.

Oskari Salminen recorded the 32-save shutout to stamp an impressive defensive effort from the hosts that included going a perfect 6-6 on the penalty kill.

The Moose will now hit the road for a matchup on Friday against the Chicago Wolves.
