A 24-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by an SUV in a hit-and-run on Portage Avenue Sunday night.

Winnipeg police and fire paramedic crews raced to the intersection of Portage Avenue and Berry Street at about 11:30 p.m., where they found the seriously injured woman lying in the road. She was taken to hospital in unstable condition, where she later died.

Investigators have determined Romaniuk was crossing Portage Avenue when she was struck by the vehicle, which is a silver or grey late-model SUV. The driver and any occupants fled the scene.

Police ask anyone with  information, including dash camera footage of the SUV, to call the traffic division at 204-986-7086 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Woman found dead, man still missing in Cockeram Lake

Canadian Armed Forces rangers and RCMP officers are searching for a missing fisher whose boat was found overturned and submerged in Cockeram Lake in northern Manitoba Sunday.

The 61-year-old man went fishing on the lake, which is about 10 kilometres east of the Town of Lynn Lake, with a 30-year-old woman. The pair were reported missing at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Police and army rangers began to search by air and on the ground early Sunday, where they found the boat submerged. In the evening Sunday, civilian searchers found the woman’s body. RCMP divers are on route to Lynn Lake to help in the search for the man, Mounties said Monday.

Bisons get home playoff date after MacEwan stripped of wins

A decision to strip MacEwan University of nine victories from the 2022 Canada West conference schedule has bumped the Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team to a fourth-place finish and the right to host the first home playoff date in program history Saturday.

MacEwan, first-place finishers with a 12-2 record, have been dropped to 3-11 and sixth place after it was ruled the Griffins had used an ineligible player, the conference announced Monday.

As a result, the 7-7-1 Bisons moved from fifth to fourth place and earned the right to host the fifth-place Regina Cougars in a four vs. five play-in game on Saturday. Game time at IG Field is 5:30 p.m.
