Apartment tower blaze sends three people to hospital

Three people were taken to hospital, including one in critical condition, after a fire broke out at a Manitoba Housing tower in St. Boniface.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said a monitored fire alarm was activated 101 Marion St., at the 16-storey high-rise, around 6:15 a.m. on Friday.

Responders found heavy smoke in the building and due to “significant safety concerns” a second alarm was called, the WFPS said. The fire was extinguished at 7:53 a.m. with the use of aerosol fire suppression devices.

Fifteen people were assessed by paramedics on scene and three were taken to hospital, including one in critical condition and two in unstable condition.

Officials say damage from the fire was mostly contained to one floor but other areas sustained significant smoke and water damage. The WFPS could not say how many suites were impacted and how many residents will be displaced.

Manitoba Housing is on scene to arrange alternate accommodations. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews were called to Roslyn Road at 6:44 a.m. for report of a fire in a three-storey structure.

On arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building and brought the blaze under control by 7:02 a.m.

A search of the building found no occupants and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates were not immediately available.

WFPS makes water rescue at The Forks

Winnipeg firefighters rescued a person from the Assiniboine River in the wee hours Friday morning.

Using a drone to aid in tracking the person’s location, emergency staff with Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service saw the individual about three metres from shore near The Forks footbridge, waded in and then pulled the person to safety just before 2:30 a.m.

It’s not clear how long the person was in the river.

The person went to hospital in stable condition.

Jets’ Ehlers placed on injured reserve, Toninato called up

Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers has been placed on injured reserve and will miss at least two more games in addition to the pair he’s already been sidelined for.

The earliest he can be activated is next Tuesday. Winnipeg hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday at Canada Life Centre, and the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

Ehlers suffered a lower body ailment during Monday’s 4-1 loss in Dallas. He didn’t dress for Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime victory in Colorado, or Thursday’s 5-2 defeat in Las Vegas.

Ehlers has three assists in the two games he’s played.

To fill his roster spot, the Jets have recalled forward Dominic Toninato for the Manitoba Moose.

Wastewater shows COVID levels increasing

Viral load of COVID-19 in the city’s wastewater is on the rise.

Sewage in the north, south and west ends of Winnipeg showed increased levels of COVID-19, according to the latest data published Friday by the Public Health Agency of Canada in weekly wastewater surveillance reports.

Wastewater collected from the north end showed 220 copies per million litres as of Oct. 17 — a 39 per cent increase in viral load since Oct. 13. South end wastewater showed 210 copies per million litres — a 59 per cent increase from Oct. 13 to 17. In the west end, viral load was 108 copies per million litres, which is a 100 per cent increase since Oct. 13.

The data published Friday is current as of Oct. 17. It shows Winnipeg is in the majority of municipalities across Canada that are seeing increases in viral load in their wastewater. Fifteen of the 26 regularly monitored neighbourhoods across the country logged an increase, while eight had no change and only three showed a decreasing level of COVID-19 viral load.

The wastewater surveillance dashboard is published here.
