Disraeli Freeway closed because of fire

The Disraeli Freeway is closed to northbound traffic because of a fire in a vacant duplex on Lily Street this morning.

The median southbound lane on the Disraeli is also closed, as is Lily Street.

Drivers are urged to find alternate routes because of “extremely smoky conditions,” the City of Winnipeg said in a news release.

Fire crews were sent to the two-storey duplex in the first 100 block of Lily at 4:42 a.m.

Crews are fighting the blaze from outside the building because conditions are too unsafe for firefighters to enter, the city said.

Fire crews are expected be at the scene throughout the morning.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were called to the 100 block of Johnson Avenue West at about 2:29 a.m. for a report of an injured man, police said.

The officers found the man unresponsive near a home and gave him medical care, before he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead. His name and age have not been released.

His death ties the 2019 record for the highest number of killings in a single year in the city’s history.

Body of missing boater found

The body of a fisher who went missing while on Cockeram Lake has been found.

The RCMP thanks residents of Marcel Colomb First Nation and Lynn Lake for their “countless hours of searching.”

The man was one of two boaters who died in the incident. The body of a 30-year-old woman, also from Lynn Lake, was found by civilian searchers on the evening of Oct. 16.

The pair was reported missing to RCMP at about 10 p.m. on Oct. 15. A search of the lake, which is about 10 km east of the town of Lynn Lake, began the next morning.

No one injured in explosion at homeless camp

No one was injured when propane tanks exploded at a homeless camp on Sunday.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said several tents were engulfed in flames at the temporary encampment near Higgins Avenue at about 7 p.m.

The cause is under investigation but firefighters believe propane tanks being used there caught fire and exploded.
