Two detained for breaking and entering on Clarence Avenue

Two people were arrested for breaking and entering a commercial property in the 1200 block of Clarence Avenue on Saturday, Nov. 5.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., police arrived at the location after responding to a report where they found the two suspects breaking into a car in the commercial property’s parking lot.

While fleeing the scene, the suspects rammed into a police car. The collision caused extensive damage to the car but no officers were injured.

Later, the car was tracked with assistance from the police chopper and located at Hurst Way and Waverley Street. The suspects were arrested without incident.

A large amount of property was seized from the stolen car including firearms, car keys, license plates and identity documents.

A 45-year-old Saskatoon man has been charged with various offences including breaking and entering with intent, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of a weapon.

A 38-year-old woman from Winnipeg has also been charged with breaking and entering.

Winnipeg police identify Saturday homicide victim

The Winnipeg Police Service has identified the 21-year-old man who was shot on an Exchange District street early Saturday morning as Tristan James Raynard Asham.

Police went to the 200 block of McDermot Avenue at about 2:20 a.m., where they found Asham with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Officers and paramedics gave him emergency medical care, police said on Saturday, but he died in hospital of critical injuries.

The homicide unit has not made any arrests but asked anyone with information on the slaying to call investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Asham’s slaying is Winnipeg’s 45th homicide of 2022, which set a grim new record for the most people killed in a single year. The previous record was 44 in 2019.

Man, 45, dies in Logan Avenue fire

Winnipeg police are investigating after a man was found dead following a fire in a home on Logan Avenue early Sunday.

Officers on patrol spotted a fire in the residence on the 700 block of Logan Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. and called for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, police said.

Officers got inside the home and helped a 69-year-old woman escape, but a 45-year-old man was still inside. Police said officers went back inside to try to find the man but had to flee because of the fire’s intensity.

Firefighters found the man dead inside, while the woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, police said. Major crimes police are investigating.
