WINNIPEG police are investigating after a man was found dead following a fire in a home on Logan Avenue early Sunday.

Officers on patrol spotted a fire in the residence on the 700 block of Logan Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. and called for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, police said.

Officers got inside the home and helped a 69-year-old woman escape, but a 45-year-old man was still inside. Police said officers went back inside to try to find the man but had to flee because of the fire’s intensity.

Firefighters found the man dead inside, while the woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, police said. Major crimes police are investigating.

Firefighters extinguished two other blazes on Sunday.

Crews raced to the 2500 block of Day Street at about 11:30 a.m. for a reported fire in a commercial building, where they found a minor fire inside.

Paramedics treated four people, who were taken to hospital in stable condition.

The fire paramedic service said the fire started accidentally, but gave no further details.

Then at 12:30 p.m., a vacant three-storey apartment on the 400 block of Young Street caught on fire.

Crews found flames and smoke inside, but doused it from the interior and exterior, getting it under control just before 1 p.m.

Firefighters found no one inside and no injuries were reported.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
