Manitoba to offer Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to infants, toddlers

Parents and caregivers will soon have a second vaccine option when it comes to immunizing the youngest kids against COVID-19.

On Tuesday, Manitoba Public Health said it will begin distributing the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children aged six months to four years old to clinics, pharmacies and vaccine sites.

The shots should be available as early as this week.

Health Canada approved the three-dose vaccine series on Sept. 9 and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization provided recommendations for its use on Oct. 21. Previously, the Moderna vaccine was available to youngsters in Manitoba. It was approved for use in July.

Most parents and caregivers making a first vaccine appointment for their child should expect the Pfizer vaccine to be offered, public health officials said.

The remaining provincial stock of the Moderna infant vaccine will be used for second doses for kids who previously received that shot. NACI strongly recommends the Moderna infant vaccine for immunocompromised children.

The city will hold a public information session on the proposal from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at École South Point School.
