Suspect charged in 2021 homicide

Winnipeg police officers have arrested a suspect in connection to a May 2021 homicide.On Thursday, police charged 27-year-old Leslie Boyd Cook with the second-degree murder of Princeton Xavier Linden Upshaw, 30. Both men are identified as being from Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Saturday morning press release.

Cook was already in custody at the Milner Ridge Correction Centre, roughly 80 kilometres east of the city, when police laid the charges.

Police found Upshaw dead on May 23, 2021, in the 100 block of Henry Avenue. An autopsy confirmed the death was a homicide, WPS said.

Machete-wielding man arrested

A Winnipeg man seen wielding a weapon and uttering threats has been arrested.Around 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Winnipeg police officers responded to reports of a man armed with a large machete and threatening students and security staff on the University of Winnipeg campus at 515 Portage Ave., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Saturday morning press release.

After leaving the property, security staff followed the suspect to Axworthy Health and RecPlex in the 300 block of Spence Street.

When police arrived, they found the suspect inside the building, still armed with the machete.

Officers arrested a 45-year-old man, charging him with a series of crimes, including possessing a weapon, uttering threats, and resisting arrest.

He was detained in custody, police said.

Suspect caught stashing sawed-off shotgun in garbage bin

Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect after catching him attempting to stash a sawed-off shotgun in a garbage bin.Around 12:30 p.m. Friday, officers patrolling near the intersection of Main Street and Burrows Avenue saw a wanted man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk. They attempted to arrest him, but the man fled, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Saturday morning press release.

Shortly after, police found the suspect in a back lane in the 200 block of Pritchard Avenue. They arrested him and recovered a sawed-off shotgun and one round of ammunition inside a nearby garbage bin, WPS said.

A 32-year-old Winnipeg man is charged with numerous offences, including possession of a prohibited firearm and failure to comply with conditions of a release order.

Oak Park High School was crowned junior varsity provincial champions at IG Field after a 35-13 drubbing over Dakota Collegiate.The Raiders, who stifled the Lancers’ bid to capture back-to-back JV titles, finished their exceptional season a perfect 9-0.

Oak Park’s Onan Hurst was named offensive player of the game while Dakota’s Destiny Okedera was honoured as the defensive player of the game.
