Winnipeg man arrested for several break-ins and theft charges

A 34-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested last week for several break-ins and thefts from commercial properties within the city.

Over a span of several months, the suspect stole hundreds of dollars worth of property including televisions, paintings, cash, vape pens, and mobile phones.

Following an investigation, the Winnipeg Police Service arrested the suspect without incident at his home in the 100 block of Smith Street on Nov. 10.

Some of the items believed to be stolen were found in the house and returned to the rightful owner.

The suspect remains in custody.

Police recover $154,000 worth of stolen property in North End

The Winnipeg Police Service recovered stolen property at approximately $154,000 on a property in the city’s North End on Nov. 11.

At approximately 12:45 p.m, the North District Community Support officers went to the suspect’s home on the 500 block of Pipeline Road. The police found a 36-year-old man sleeping in a 2002 GMC Sierra they determined was reported stolen from Whitemouth earlier in August.

The suspect was arrested without incident.

On further investigation, officers found and seized stolen property including a couple of camping trailers, a Mercedez Benz, a motorcycle, and a children’s quad, stolen over the past few months.

The suspect is facing a slew of charges including five counts possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, and three charges of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000.

He remains in custody.

Crews respond to two overnight fires in high-rises

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two fires in high-rise buildings on Kennedy Street and Donald Street on Sunday, Nov. 13.

At 2:42 a.m. firefighters were called to a 16-storey building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street. The smoke was coming from inside the building, the crew said.

Due to the high-life safety considerations associated with a high-rise building, a second alarm was called and more crews responded.

The fire was tackled from inside the building and brought under control at 3:50 a.m. No one was injured.

Later at 4:57 a.m, the WFPS crew responded to reports of a fire in an 8-storey mixed-use building in the 200 block of Donald Street.

They saw the building’s sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. Crews remained on scene to ensure the fire had not spread and to confirm the building was safe for re-entry.

No one was injured. Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental.

Moose storm back to post OT win

Leon Gawanke’s overtime tally lifted the Manitoba Moose to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Calgary Wranglers Sunday afternoon in American Hockey League action.

Calgary led 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes at Canada Life Centre and the clubs were deadlocked 3-3 after the second and third periods.

Cole Maier, Henri Nikkanen and Chaz Lucius fired second-period tallies for the Moose, who improved to 7-3-1 and lead the Central Division.

Manitoba goalie Oskari Salminen allowed three goals on 10 shots and was pulled early in the middle frame and replaced by Arvid Holm. In relief, Holm stopped all 24 drives he faced as his team stormed back from a 3-1 deficit.

It was redemption for the Moose, who fell 3-2 to the Wranglers on Friday night.

Bombers lead Lions 19-8 at the half

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lead the B.C. Lions 19-8 after two quarters of the Western Final at IG Field.

The Bombers opened the scoring with quarterback Zach Collaros hitting Dalton Schoen for a 19-yard touchdown. The Lions scored their touchdown after Bombers returner Janarion Grant muffed a punt in the first quarter. B.C. recovered at the two-yard line and scored on the next play.

Grant would make up for it in a big way with a 92-yard punt return score in the second quarter to give the Bombers a 16-7 advantage.

Bombers kicker Marc Liegghio drilled a pair of field goals.

The winner will play the Toronto Argonauts next Sunday in Regina for the Grey Cup.

Jets make pair of lineup changes for game with Kraken

SEATTLE — The Winnipeg Jets will make a pair of lineup changes tonight as they close out a quick road trip against the Seattle Kraken.

Backup goaltender David Rittich will make his third start of the year. No. 1 netminder Connor Hellebuyck has played 11 of the first 13 games, including Saturday night in Calgary when the Jets lost 3-2 to the Flames.

Forward Mikey Eyssimont will take the spot of Jansen Harkins, who was hit in the mouth with a puck Saturday and required multiple stitches. Eyssimont, recalled last week from the Manitoba Moose, has one previous NHL game on his resume, which came last season.

Harkins, Dominic Toninato and Kyle Capobianco will be the scratches for the Jets, who are 8-4-1.

Winnipeg opens a three-game homestand on Thursday against the Anaheim Ducks.

5:44 PM

Bombers enter fourth quarter with 25-13 advantage over B.C.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lead the B.C. Lions 25-13 after three quarters of play in the Western Final.

Dakota Prukop scored a rushing touchdown in the third quarter to extend Winnipeg’s lead.

The winner will play the Toronto Argonauts next Sunday in Regina for the Grey Cup.
