Jets’ Ehlers to undergo surgery for sports hernia

The hits keep coming for the Winnipeg Jets on the injury front.

Forward Nikolaj Ehlers will undergo surgery for a sports hernia next week, coach Rick Bowness announced this morning. The dynamic winger last played a game on Oct. 17, when he suffered a lower-body injury.

He’s missed the last 13 games, and now is going to miss a whole lot more. Typical recovery time for a sports hernia is in the six to 12 week category. That would mean some time between early January to mid-February as a potential return.

Ehlers returned to the ice this past Wednesday for a brief solo skate but “felt something,” according to Bowness. They had hoped to avoid surgery, but decided it was now the best course of action.

Ehlers had three assists in his first two games.

Winnipeg is already without forwards Morgan Barron and Mason Appleton, who both recently underwent wrist surgery.
