Manitoba’s representatives had truly memorable runs at the Canadian Masters Curling Championships.

The Judy Colwell team from East St. Paul and the Murray Warren crew from Brandon/Melita earned some hardware Sunday at Winnipeg’s Pembina Club.

Colwell came up just short in the women’s final, dropping a 6-4 decision to Penny Shantz of B.C.

Colwell, with third Wendy Nykoluk, second Donny Smiley, lead Leslie Brown and fifth Debbie Palson, settled for the silver medal.

Warren, meanwhile, defeated Wes Craig of B.C. 7-4 in the men’s bronze-medal clash. He’s joined by third Brian Barker, and two of his brothers, Terry Warren and Reg Warren, on the front end.

Two-time world men’s champion Al Hackner of Northern Ontario, won the gold medal, beating Gord Bell of Saskatchewan 7-4. Jan Carwardine of Ontario edged Jocelyn Nix of Nova Scotia 4-3 in the battle for third place in women’s play.

A  22-year-old woman from the Ebb & Flow First Nation, who was missing since last week, has been located safe and sound, Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP said in a news release Sunday.

Shayna Jamie Roulette was last seen in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, when she left her residence.

Winnipeg pastor Leon Fontaine has died, according to his church. He was 59.

Springs Church announced on Sunday that Fontaine died on Saturday, according to media reports. Fontaine had been one of the senior pastors at Springs Church Winnipeg since 1994.

He is survived by his wife Sally, four daughters, one son, and five grandchildren.

 

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 100 block of Shamrock Drive Sunday morning.

There were flames and smoke coming from within the house, the crew said.

Firefighters tackled the fire from the inside and brought it under control at 12:20 p.m.

No one was injured.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental.
