Man killed in Furby Street shooting

Winnipeg’s record of deadly violence continues to grow, with the city recording its 47th homicide of the year.

Around 1:44 a.m. Saturday, police responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment in the 500 block of Furby Street, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Saturday release.

Upon arrival, officers found administered emergency medical care to a severely injured man. He was transported to hospital and critical condition and later pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the death as a homicide.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Bombers ink Jefferson to one-year extension

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed defensive end Willie Jefferson to a one-year extension, the CFL club announced Saturday.

Jefferson was on an expiring contract, and would have become a free agent in February. Instead, the heart and soul of the Bombers defensive line is back for the 2023 season.

The signing comes two days after the Bombers extended all-star offensive lineman Patrick Neufeld on a one-year deal. More signings are expected to come over the next days and weeks as the Bombers try to re-sign their other 24 pending free agents.

RCMP ask for public assistance in Portage la Prairie kidnapping

Manitoba RCMP is asking for help locating a man they believe to be involved in a random kidnapping.

In a Saturday release, RCMP said a 25-year-old woman and two-year-old child were victims of a “random kidnapping” on Friday in the Portage la Prairie area

Both victims were recovered safely, and RCMP have identified a male suspect.

Police will release more information at a press conference in Winnipeg on Saturday, they said.

Missing woman found safe

Winnipeg police have found a missing Winnipeg woman.

Deborah Thompson, 63, was safely located on Saturday, the Winnipeg Police Service said.

Police issued a silver alert on Nov. 22, asking for the public’s help locating Thompson, who was last seen in the St. Boniface area around noon.

A silver alert is activated when a vulnerable adult is reported as missing.
