Fire razes Langside Street homeless camp

A homeless encampment was destroyed by fire Sunday evening.

Fire crews were sent to the location in the 600 block of Langside Street at about 6:06 p.m. Sunday. Several tents were engulfed in flames and smoke.

“Numerous small explosions were suspected to be the result of various compressed gas cylinders and/or propane tanks,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Sunday night.

All of the people inside the tents and the two neighbouring homes got out safely and were not hurt, the WFPS said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The encampment is considered “a complete loss,” the WFPS said.

One neighbouring house sustained minor heat and smoke damage.

Hunt on for suspect considered armed and dangerous

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect in an assault who is considered armed and dangerous.

Yellowhead RCMP say Wayne William Joseph Becks, 39, of Dauphin, may be in possession of firearms and people are being warned not to approach him, but to call 911.

Becks is wanted for an assault on a woman who was left with “severe, life-altering injuries” on Nov. 11, police say.

Anyone with information on Becks is asked to call Wasagaming RCMP at 204-848-2659, Hamiota RCMP at 204-764-2732, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
