Man dies after being shot by police officer on Portage Avenue

A man is dead after he was shot by Winnipeg police during a traffic stop Saturday night.

Police were conducting the stop on Portage Avenue and Bourkevale Drive around 7:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.

“During the incident, a firearm was discharged by one of the officers, striking the adult male driver,” police said in the release.

The man was rushed to hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.

The man’s age and identity have not been released.

No other details about the incident were provided.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is now investigating.

Winnipeg woman arrested on assault and theft charges

A 30-year-old Winnipeg woman has been arrested for stealing a car, and assaulting a police officer, according to a news release on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Earlier this week, police located a confirmed stolen car, a 2018 Audi A5 Quattro, in the city’s North End. The police conducted a traffic stop at Pritchard Avenue and McGregor Street. However, the lone occupant of the car rammed a police cruiser and fled the scene.

The suspect was subsequently involved in a collision with another car at Main Street and Cathedral Avenue, after which she abandoned the stolen car and fled on foot. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

With the help of city-wide units and Air1, the suspect was found hiding in the rear lane of Bannerman Avenue and Main Street and placed under arrest. A knife was also seized as evidence.

On further investigation, the suspect has also been linked to an assault that took place on Nov. 6 at a home in the 700 block of Pacific Avenue. The suspect threatened to kill a 55-year-old man and also fired a shot. The victim was taken to the hospital for his lower-body injuries.

The suspect is facing charges including assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, aggravated assault, dangerous driving, discharging a restricted firearm, and uttering threats.

Jets trail Ducks 1-0 after first period

The Winnipeg Jets have come out slow against the NHL’s worst team.

Jakob Silfverberg scored just as a power play had expired to give the Anaheim Ducks a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes at Canada Life Centre.

Winnipeg was outshot 17-7 in the first period, and went 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Jets are coming off an ugly 4-1 loss on Friday night to the Columbus Blue Jackets, which snapped a three-game winning streak.

3:52 PM

Jets, Ducks tied 2-2 through two periods

The Winnipeg Jets have erased a 2-0 deficit to pull even with the Anaheim Ducks through two periods at Canada Life Centre.

Jakob Silfverberg and Brett Leason gave the visitors the lead by early in the second period, but Saku Maenalanen and Dylan Samberg — with his first-ever NHL goal — rallied to tie it.

Shots are 23-22 for the Ducks through 40 minutes.

This is the third of a four-game homestand for Winnipeg. They’ll host Paul Maurice and the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.
