Business partnership dispute ends in shooting

A Winnipeg man is in hospital after being shot after a business partnership dispute.

Winnipeg police said on Thursday a 28-year-old man was rushed to hospital after being found injured in a storage facility in the 1000 block of Elgin Avenue on Tuesday at about 7:30 p.m.

Police said the victim is in stable condition after being shot in the lower body. A .22 calibre rifle was found on the property.

A suspect was arrested while trying to flee the property in a vehicle.

Police said the suspect had fired one shot towards the victim before another hit him during a struggle for the weapon. A bystander jumped in and helped take the weapon away from the suspect, who allegedly fled saying he would kill the victim.

Dharma Singh, 27, has been charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent, and uttering threats.

Singh has been detained in custody.

Goldeyes hire Tagert as new manager

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have found their new skipper.

Greg Tagert was named field manager for the pro baseball club this morning, becoming the fourth person to hold the position in franchise history. He succeeds Rick Forney, who led the Fish for 26 years before resigning in October.

Tagert, 59, is quite familiar with the Goldeyes. He managed the Gary SouthShore RailCats for 17 years (2005-2021) before spending last season with the San Fransisco Giants organization in the Arizona Complex League.

Tagert has won manager of the year three times in his 27-year career.

Hellebuyck returns vs. Bruins

Connor Hellebuyck returns to the crease after missing Tuesday’s win over the Ottawa Senators.

The Jets No. 1 goaltender was out with an illness unrelated to COVID-19. He’ll be making his 25th start tonight against the Eastern-Division-leading Boston Bruins.

The Jets will go with the same players that suited up against the Senators, but with a couple of tweaks. Coach Rick Bowness has split up his bottom two defensive pairings: Dylan Samberg will play alongside Neal Pionk and Ville Heinola is paired with Brenden Dillon.

Injured forwards Nikolaj Ehlers (sports hernia) and Saku Maenalanen (upper-body) were both skating with the club in Boston but are still weeks away from making a return to the lineup.

Library to partly reopen Friday: city website

The Millennium Library will partially reopen to let patrons pickup books they’ve placed on hold and return materials on Friday, with other services remaining closed, according to a notice on the city’s website.

The site states this service will be available during normal hours of operation, while the library’s external book return will be available 24/7.

The downtown library has been closed since Dec. 11, when 28-year-old Tyree Cayer was stabbed to death inside the building. Four teenage boys have since been charged in his death.

Mayor Scott Gillingham and others have vowed not to fully reopen the library to the public until additional security measures are put in place.
