A convicted killer serving a life sentence for second-degree murder escaped from a Winnipeg minimum security healing lodge on Boxing Day.

Joyce Kringuk, 42, fled through a backdoor at Eagle Women’s Lodge at about 10:15 p.m. Dec. 26, Correctional Service of Canada said Tuesday in a news release.

Staff at the 667 Ellice Ave. facility called city police and a warrant for her arrest was issued.

The corrections service said it and the facility are investigating the incident and are working with police to locate Kringuk. Officials asked for anyone aware of where she might be to call city police.

Kringuk is 4-9 and about 170 lb, with brown eyes, black hair and scars on her lower back and the inside of her right bicep.

She has a heart tattooed on her left wrist, “Joyce” on her left shoulder, a heart with stars on her right wrist, and “JI” on her right forearm.

According to Nunavut newspaper Nunatsiaq News, Kringuk was convicted in 2012 of shooting and killing her husband, a wildlife officer.

She admitted to killing Joani Kringayark at his cabin near Repulse Bay, Nvt., on Aug. 8, 2008, after a drunken argument led to Kringayark shoving Kringuk, who then grabbed his loaded rifle, the newspaper reported.

She tried to shoot herself, then pointed the weapon above Kringayark’s head, closed her eyes, lowered the weapon and pulled the trigger, the newspaper wrote.

It reported Kringuk, who was addicted to alcohol, has had a tumultuous life, having been sexually assaulted “many” times as a child and adult.
