Main Street closed between Higgins and Dufferin as crews battle fire
10:11 AM
Main Street between Higgins and Dufferin avenues is closed Saturday morning as crews continue to battle a fire in a mixed-use, two-storey building.
Crews arrived at the 800 block of Main Street at 7:19 a.m. and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.
Firefighters are expected to remain on scene throughout the day, according to a release from the city.
The building’s occupants self-evacuated and one neighbouring high-rise apartment block was evacuated as a precaution. Winnipeg Transit busses are being used to shelter evacuees.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the building will be a complete loss.

Jets make trio of lineup changes for tonight
5:03 PM
The Winnipeg Jets are making a trio of lineup changes as they search for an end to a lengthy slump against the Edmonton Oilers tonight at Canada Life Centre.
Forward Vlad Namestnikov will make his debut after being obtained Friday in a trade with San Jose. Coach Rick Bowness wouldn’t say which skater will come out to make room for the 30-year-old Russian.
Defencemen Dylan Samberg and Kyle Capobianco will both play after being healthy scratches. Logan Stanley and Nate Schmidt will be relegated to the sidelines.
Pierre-Luc Dubois and Mason Appleton remain out with injuries.
Connor Hellebuyck starts in net for Winnipeg, which lost 6-3 last night in Edmonton. It’s the fifth straight loss for the struggling club.
