Section of river trail, access points closed

The Nestaweya River Trail from Churchill Drive to the Norwood Bridge on the Red River has closed, The Forks said in a release Saturday.

The section is closed to walking, skating and skiing. Access points to the area have also been closed. Ice thickness in the section will no longer be monitored.

The trail is open from the Donald Street Bridge on the Assiniboine River to the Norwood Bridge on the Red River.

Details on trail conditions can be found online.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach dies

Legendary former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Bud Grant has died.

He was 95.

Grant had resided in northern Wisconsin.

With Grant at the helm, the Bombers appeared in six Grey Cups from 1957-66, winning four (1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962).

He also led the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowl appearances, although his club lost each time.

Grant was the first person to be inducted into both the CFL Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Vikings announced Grant’s death on social media Saturday.

“We are absolutely devastated to announce legendary Minnesota Vikings head coach and Hall of Famer Bud Grant has passed away this morning at age 95,” the post said. “We, like all Vikings and NFL fans, are shocked and saddened by this terrible news.”

Wesmen lose consolation semifinal

Kevin Civil scored seven of his 14 points in the double overtime period to lead the UQAM Citadins to a 90-85 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in consolation semifinal action at the U Sports national men’s basketball championship in Halifax Saturday afternoon.

Shawn Maranan had a team-high 20 points for the Wesmen, who had an 11-point lead after three quarters. The teams were tied 72-72 after four quarters and 79-79 after the first overtime period.

Mike Mikhailov had 19 points and 15 rebounds for Winnipeg.

 

 

Man stabbed in downtown Winnipeg

A 46-year-old man was rushed to the hospital Friday, after he was stabbed in downtown Winnipeg.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Hargrave Street around 5 p.m. and found a man suffering from stab wounds in his upper body, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Saturday.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, but later upgraded to stable condition.

Police have made no arrests in the case, saying the suspect fled before officers arrived.

The major crimes unit continues to investigate, police said.

Police arrest, charge man after random attack

One man is in custody and a woman is recovering after a random attack in the Exchange District.

Around 8 p.m. Friday, police found an injured, 47-year-old woman near the intersection of  Main Street and James Avenue. Officers determined she was the victim of an unprovoked assault, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Saturday.

According to the release, the woman was near the intersection when a suspect attacked her, causing her to fall and hit her head on the concrete. The suspect continued assault her on the ground until a bystander intervened. The suspect fled, police said.

After the attack, paramedics assessed the victim and medically cleared her.

Police arrested and charged a 39-year-old Winnipeg man with assault.

High-speed pursuit ends in collision

A high-speed pursuit in Transcona ended with a multi-vehicle collision and damage to a Winnipeg Transit bus Friday evening, Winnipeg police said in a release Saturday.

Around 6:40 p.m., police saw a 2017 Ford Escape driving in the wrong direction in the northbound lanes of Plessis Road.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect drove over a median and fled at a “high rate of speed.” The suspect entered a parking lot in the 1400 block of Regent Avenue and crashed into a vehicle, before exiting the lot and colliding with two more vehicles and a bus, police said.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was arrested. Police recovered $4,500 worth of various drugs from the stolen vehicle, including roughly 42 grams of methamphetamine, police said.

Officers determined the SUV was taken from around Stonewall earlier that day.

A 29-year-old Winnipeg man is facing numerous charges, including assaulting a police officer, fleeing pursuit and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.
