Woman survives drug overdose after being treated in downtown bus shelter
9:49 AM
A 28-year-old woman who was found unconscious in a downtown bus shelter Saturday morning is expected to recover after being treated for an opioid overdose.
A Good Samaritan flagged down police cadets at around 11:30 a.m. after discovering the woman in the shelter at Main Street and William Avenue, Winnipeg police said in a news release Sunday. They provided six doses of Naloxone to revive the woman. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Naloxone is a medication used to reverse or reduce the effects of opioids.
Last week, a 34-year-old man was given four doses of Naloxone after he tracked down police cadets and said he had just used “down” — a potent street mixture typically made of fentanyl and/or heroin, with a stimulant such as caffeine or ephedrine.
Police recommend drug users never take substances alone — and carry Naloxone if opioids could be present.
