Taxi driver stabbed on McPhillips Street

1:38 PM

A 52-year-old man stabbed a taxi driver on McPhillips Street Saturday, according to a news release Sunday.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., patrol officers received a report of a taxi cab driver stabbed by a man on the 1000 block of McPhillips Street.

Police said the suspect had approached the driver, 36, in his parked cab and demanded a ride. The suspect then became enraged and threatened to kill the victim before stabbing him and fleeing the scene.

Police found the injured victim on scene. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and later released.

Another police unit, looking for the suspect, was tipped off by passersby who directed them to the 1200 block of Church Avenue where they found and arrested the suspect.

The suspect is facing several charges including assault with a weapon, uttering threats, causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon.

He was released on an undertaking.

Lizotte suspended one game for crosscheck on Morrissey

2:45 PM

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey got more than a dozen stitches.

L.A. forward Blake Lizotte got suspended one game.

That was the punishment meted out by the NHL department of player safety today for an ugly incident that occurred Saturday.

Morrissey had dropped his gloves to fight at 14:10 of the second period, and Lizotte answered by crosschecking the Winnipeg blue-liner in the chin. He was assessed a match penalty and tossed from the game.

Lizotte will forfeit $9,054.05. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The Jets scored on the five-minute power play but lost 4-1.
