four arrests in deadly attacks

WINNIPEG police have arrested four suspects in relation to a spate of assaults in Point Douglas last summer that left three people dead.

The suspects and victims did not know each other, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Friday.

On Aug. 22, 2022, Danielle Ballantyne, 36, Marvin Felix, 54, and Troy Baguley, 51, were seriously assaulted. Ballantyne was found dead inside a Jarvis Avenue apartment, while Felix died of his injuries days later.

Baguley, who suffered life-altering damage in the attack, never recovered from his injuries and died on March 3.

On March 21, investigators arrested 21-year-old Tristan Colten Moose at Headingley Correctional Centre, charging him with second-degree murder in relation to Baguley’s death, police said.

Officers have also arrested three youths, aged 14, 15 and 16.

The elder teens were arrested shortly after the assault and held at the Manitoba Youth Centre, while the younger teen was arrested at his home on April 5.

Police have finished their investigation and all four suspects remain in custody, police said.

New chief for Peguis First Nation

PEGUIS First Nation has elected a new chief after a controversial election.

Stan Bird, a psychologist, won out over Glenn Hudson, the longtime incumbent. Bird also beat Cindy Spence, who was chief from 2015-2017.

Hudson was first elected chief in 2007 and re-elected five times, in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2019.

A total of 915 people voted for Bird, while 481 voted for Hudson, 409 for Marty Favel, 226 for Annette Spence Meeches and 116 for Cindy Spence.

The election was fraught with controversy — on March 31, the band leadership ordered advance ballots cast on March 28 to be burned.

Advance polls scheduled in Winnipeg and Selkirk were then axed.

The vote was rescheduled to Thursday.
