Cockerill nearly picks up first Tour victory

9:02 AM

Manitoba golfer Aaron Cockerill missed winning his first European tour event by a whisker Sunday.

Cockerill, who hails from Stony Mountain, lipped out with a chance to win on the first playoff hole and then fell to Australia’s Lucas Herbert on the second at the ISPS Handa Championship in Omitama, Japan.

Cockerill pocketed just shy of CDN$300,000 and moved up 80 spots to No. 25 on what is officially called the DP Tour.

Herbert rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole to prevail after Cockerill missed a longer birdie putt. Earlier, Cockerill’s ball caught a piece of the cup but stayed out on the first playoff hole, also on the 18th.

Cockerill had made a brilliant sand shot within a foot to secure a par on the final hole in regulation to force the playoff.

Police advise against tainted drugs after 6 survive overdose in The Pas

2:21 PM

RCMP are advising the public against a dangerous illicit drug circulating in The Pas after six people survived drug overdose in separate incidents on Saturday.

At approximately 8:45 pm, The Pas RCMP received a report regarding the overdoses at an establishment located on Fischer Avenue where they found four men unresponsive. Report claimed that they had ingested drugs, possibly ecstasy, believed to be laced with an opioid.

The people were treated with naloxone. Three of the four men, ages of 46, 37, and 33, were revived and taken to hospital where they were treated and later released. The fourth man, 46, was flown to Brandon where he remains in critical condition.

Several hours later, RCMP received another report of two overdoses at the same location. The two men were taken to hospital where they were treated and released. The drug is believed to be in a crystal-like powder form, purple in color, and may contain fentanyl.

The Pas RCMP are asking anyone with information to call 204-627-6204, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.
