Shone came in eighth of 11 mayoral candidates in October’s municipal election.

Kathleen Cook was recently nominated for the PCs in the Roblin riding. Cook has worked within the provincial government and in the mayor’s office. The riding, representing Charleswood and Headingley, was held by Myrna Driedger, who is not running for re-election.

The contested PC nomination meeting for the Morden-Winkler riding, formerly held by Cameron Friesen, was to be held Monday night.

Four people are seeking the nomination: Carrie Hiebert, Josh Okello, Liz Reimer and Zehid Zehri, the PC caucus confirmed.

RCMP officers cleared by watchdog in man’s death

RCMP officers did not contribute to the death of a man who shot himself during an attempted arrest in a remote community, Manitoba’s police watchdog has concluded.

The assault suspect immediately fired the weapon when police arrived and ordered him to drop the gun outside a home in Tadoule Lake on Jan. 28, 2022, according to the Independent Investigation Unit.

The IIU’s civilian director has closed the investigation.

Man, 26, arrested in coke bust

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man and seized $235,000 in cocaine after a drug trafficking investigation led to a home in the 200 block of Hawthorne Avenue Friday.

The home and a vehicle were searched and five kilograms of packaged cocaine, along with 350 grams of unpackaged cocaine, were seized. A billiard ball weapon, a money counter, material for packaging drugs and $120,000 in cash were also seized.

Riley Jordan Macdonald, a 26-year-old man from Winnipeg, faces charges of drug possession with the purpose of trafficking, weapon possession, possession of funds obtained by crime over $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking.

He remains in custody.

Windsor Hotel owner ends permit appeal

The new owner of the Windsor Hotel, which was recently deemed unfit to live in, is no longer appealing a City of Winnipeg order to obtain a boarded building permit.

A hearing on the matter was cancelled Monday, after the owner withdrew the appeal.

In a letter, the lawyer for Garry 187 Enterprises asked the city to let an assessment of the structure continue until Aug. 31, then allow “reasonable time” to complete repairs (if possible), instead of requiring the permit by April 21.

The city also ordered the owner to secure the building, which the letter says was since boarded up.

The 187 Garry St. structure (which opened as a hotel in 1910) was shut down by a provincial health hazard order in March. In a letter, lawyer Frank Bueti said the property was “unsafe and unsanitary” when the new owner took possession.

Two people were found and arrested, but police continued to search for a third suspect late Sunday afternoon.
