Nearly 200 people displaced after apartment fire

A Friday night fire that broke out in a four-storey apartment building in Heritage Park has displaced up to 180 residents.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived at the 200 block of Quail Ridge Road shortly after 7 p.m. to find a fully-involved fire, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. The fire was declared under control about two hours later.
All occupants of the building safely self-evacuated and one firefighter was assessed on-scene.
The building has approximately 45 suites and efforts are underway to assist residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimate and not available, however the building sustained “significant smoke, fire and water damage,” said a release from the city.
Police respond to assault on Main Street

Two men and two women have been arrested following an early morning assault on Main Street., police say.
Around 5 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to an assault in the 800 block of Main Street. A man was found with “serious upper body injuries” and was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to a press release. He was later upgraded to stable condition.
Charges are pending against the suspects, police say.
The major crimes unit continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
Crews respond to fires in vacant homes Saturday morning

Shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday, firefighters were sent to the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue for reports of a fire.
When crews arrived at the vacant, two-and-a-half storey house, they began battling the fire from the outside before entering the building. The fire was declared under control at 7:18 a.m.
Around 4:36 a.m. a fire had also broken out in a vacant, one-and-a-half storey house in the 1000 block of Selkirk Avenue. Once on scene, firefighters fought the fire from inside the house and it was under control by 5:11 a.m.
Both houses had damage from previous fires. The cause of these fires are under investigation. No damage estimates were available.
