Firefighters battle another vacant house fire in Winnipeg

Three people were assessed by paramedics while firefighters battled a blaze at another vacant house in Winnipeg Monday.

The people, who were inside the home in the 200 block of Magnus Avenue when crews arrived at about 9 a.m., did not have to be taken to hospital, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

About seven hours earlier, fire crews extinguished a blaze at a nearby home on Manitoba Avenue.

Metal group Tool plays downtown arena Oct. 29

Tool, the metal band from Los Angeles that has picked up four Grammy Awards since forming in 1990, plays the Canada Life Centre Oct. 29.

Tickets go on sale June 9 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca, however there is a fan-club presale scheduled for June 8. Prices were not announced.

The last time Tool played Winnipeg was 2010, however they had booked a show for the downtown arena in 2020 that was a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bunibonibee Cree Nation woman missing in Winnipeg

A 20-year-old woman from Bunibonibee Cree Nation has gone missing in Winnipeg.

Family reported Hayley Stinson missing to Oxford House RCMP on Monday. She had left the community, which is about 575 kilometres north of Winnipeg, on May 20 to travel to the city.

RCMP say she was last seen in Winnipeg on May 31 and hasn’t been in contact with her family. Mounties say her family are concerned for her wellbeing.

Stinson is 5-7, 110 lbs with long black hair and brown eyes. RCMP ask anyone with information on her whereabouts to call the Oxford House detachment at 204-538-2046 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

Begonia announces local concert dates

Begonia is coming home. The local pop singer-songwriter has announced the first Winnipeg dates on her Powder Blue Tour, which has been travelling North America since the release of her new album in February.

Begonia, a.k.a Alexa Dirks, will play Club Regent Event Centre on  Sept. 22 and 23. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, with a pre-sale starting Wednesday and general admission beginning Thursday.

Powder Blue is the second full-length album from the Juno Award-winning and Polaris Music Prize-nominated artist. Her critically acclaimed debut album Fear was released in 2019.

IIU investigates after woman goes into medical distress in RCMP custody

Manitoba’s police oversight agency is investigating after a woman went into medical distress while in RCMP custody in Portage la Prairie.

The Independent Investigation Unit is probing the June 2 incident as the woman had to be hospitalized. RCMP told the agency the woman went into distress at about 2:31 p.m. while in the detachment.

An officer checked on her before she was taken to the local hospital before being transferred to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, the IIU said.

As the woman’s injury required an admission to the hospital, the IIU is mandated to investigate. The agency has not said what kind of injury she had.

RCMP investigating shooting death in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation

RCMP major crimes investigators are probing the shooting death of a 39-year-old man in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service, which has jurisdiction in the community, were called to the shooting outside a home on the First Nation at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, RCMP said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and MFNPS called RCMP for assistance.

RCMP major crime, forensic and emergency response officers are currently investigating in the community, which is on the western edge of Lake Manitoba. Mounties said the shooting does not appear random.

Carberry Mounties find missing, injured dirt biker

Carberry RCMP officers found a seriously injured dirt biker Monday afternoon who had gone missing during a ride on Sunday evening.

The Carberry detachment was called about the missing 61-year-old at about 8:30 a.m. Monday. Mounties were told the man had gone out on dirt bike trails around his rural residence in the Rural Municipality of North Cypress-Langford Sunday and didn’t come home, RCMP said.

Officers set out on all-terrain vehicles and searched more than 30 square kilometres before finding a tire path to follow.

They found the man’s dirt bike, which had been in a collision, before finding the man nearby at about 2:30 p.m. They carried him from the bush and got him medical help for his “significant but non-life threatening injuries,” RCMP said.
