12:02 PM
Two suspects were arrested for robbing a convenience store and assaulting two employees in the 600 block of McPhillips Street Sunday.
At around midnight, the police was alerted to a report of robbery on McPhillips Street. The suspects fled the scene before the officers got there. After a coordinated search, a patrol team along with community support officers located both suspects in the back lane of Manitoba Avenue near Sinclair Street and arrested them without incident.
Investigation by the Major Crimes Unit revealed the suspects were armed with bear spray and a hatchet when they entered a convenience store and demanded money from two employees on duty.
As the employees attempted to stop the robbery, one of the suspects assaulted both victims with a metal object. Both victims were taken to hospital for upper body injuries. The suspects stole the till’s cash drawer and tobacco products before fleeing. The suspects and victims did not know each other.
Two men from Winnipeg are facing a number of charges including robbery, and possession of a weapon. A 32-year-old suspect was detained in custody while a 40-year-old suspect was released on an undertaking.
Drugs, knife seized from stolen car on McPhillips Street, suspect detained
1:33 PM
A suspect was arrested for possession of drugs and a weapon on McPhillips Street after a brief chase by the Winnipeg Police Service officers Saturday.
At approximately 11:45 p.m., police observed a vehicle with stolen license plates driving in the city’s North End. The suspect drove erratically as he fled from the police. With assistance from the police helicopter, the car was tracked entering a parking lot in the 400 block of McPhillips Street where the suspect exited the vehicle and entered a business. After a scuffle, where the suspect tried to take away a Taser from an officer, he was arrested safely.
A number of items were seized from the stolen vehicle as evidence including methamphetamine, cocaine, two cell phones, $275 in cash, and a knife.
Investigation revealed the involved vehicle, a 2018 Hyundai Tucson, was reported stolen during a robbery in the 400 block of River Avenue last month and the license plates were reported stolen between May 31 and June 3.
A 32-year-old from Winnipeg is charged with offences including disarming a peace officer, resisting arrest, dangerous driving, possession of a weapon, two counts of possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and two counts of possession of a scheduled substance.
