Injured crash victims remain hospitalized

Ten patients remain in hospital following last week’s tragic crash near Carberry, Shared Health announced Tuesday morning.

Five of the patients are in critical care.

The crash between a bus and a semi truck killed 15 people and injured 10 on June 15.

Armed man arrested at Victoria hospital, no public threat: WPS

A man has been arrested after he was found hiding in Victoria Hospital armed with a hammer this morning.

At about 7:25 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an armed male on the premises.

“West District officers located the suspect hiding within the hospital and safely placed him under arrest. There were no threats or assaults made to staff or members of the public during the incident. The suspect remains in police custody at this time,” WPS spokesman Const. Claude Chancy stated.

Portugal. The Man to play the Burt Nov. 11

Indie-rock hitmakers Portugal. The Man return to Winnipeg with a Nov. 11 concert at the Burton Cummings Theatre.

Tickets go on sale June 23 at 10 a.m. at livenation.com and ticketmaster.ca, however the first of four presales begins June 21 at 10 a.m. Prices were not announced.

The Alaska-based group, whose 2017 hit Feel It Still landed in the top-10 in 10 countries, including Canada and the United States, were the headliners for the 2022 Winnipeg Folk Festival, and helped push the event’s attendance to its second highest number in its 48-year history.

Two drownings in Island Lakes communities in recent days: RCMP

Two children have drowned in Island Lakes communities in recent days, RCMP say.

Island Lake Mounties were called to the nursing station in Garden Hill First Nation at about 4 p.m. on June 15, where they were told a 23-month-old boy was found in the lake outside his home, RCMP say. His older siblings had been watching him at the time, according to Mounties.

The baby was flown to Winnipeg for medical help, but died on Sunday. Local RCMP are still investigating.

On Sunday, officers were called to the scene of a drowning in nearby St. Theresa Point First Nation at about 7:15 p.m. A group of kids had been swimming when a pair of 10-year-old girls went too far and began to struggle and went under water, RCMP say. A bystander pulled one girl to safety, but the other could not be found immediately.

A local safety officer dove into the water and found her, but she was pronounced dead at the local nursing station.

Emerson-Franklin man dies after being hit by vehicle

A 25-year-old RM of Emerson-Franklin man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle he was trying to push out of a ditch.

Morris-Emerson RCMP said on Tuesday the man was pronounced dead near the scene on June 18 at about 3:05 a.m.

RCMP said the man was driving the vehicle, with two male passengers aged 26 and 25, when it got stuck in the ditch on Provincial Road 200 near Road 7N.

While the man was trying to push the vehicle out it suddenly went into reverse and hit him.

The two passengers called 911, put the man into the vehicle, and drove to the nearest intersection waiting for paramedics and RCMP.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Toddler drowns in Portage la Prairie after wandering from family

A two-year-old boy drowned in a retention pond in Portage la Prairie after wandering from his family Monday evening, Mounties say.

Local RCMP officers were called to the pond near a home on Old Bridge Road at about 7:20 p.m., where they were told family members had been out with the tot before he wandered off, Mounties say.

A “very short time later,” family found him in the pond, RCMP say. The toddler was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Portage RCMP are still investigating.

Oliveira listed as doubtful vs. Lions

Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira is listed as doubtful to play in the CFL club’s Week 3 matchup with the B.C. Lions at IG Field Thursday night.

The Bombers released their daily injury report late Tuesday afternoon and Oliveira, dealing with a thorax injury suffered in last Friday’s win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was listed as a non-participant for the closed practice, making it two straight workouts he’s now missed. Oliveira’s official status for the game will be revealed Wednesday morning, ahead of the team’s walkthrough.

OL Tui Eli (lower leg) and DL Cam Lawson (knee), both of whom have missed the first two games of the regular season while occupying a spot on the one-game injured list, have also missed both practices this week and their status is questionable for Thursday. Receiver Dalton Schoen, who missed Monday’s workout with a hip issue, was a full participant on Tuesday and is expected to play against the visiting Lions.
