Sandy Bay homicide arrest
9:08 AM
A suspect has been arrested in connection with the slaying of a woman at the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation last month.
RCMP said on Thursday Fantasia Smith, 26, has been arrested and they thank the public and media for their help. Smith had already been charged with second degree murder.
RCMP had issued a warrant for Smith’s arrest after finding a 24-year-old woman dead inside a residence at the reserve on the west side of Lake Manitoba on June 29 at about 3:15 p.m.
Manitoba to spend $10 million on more cops, downtown surveillance
10:33 AM
Premier Heather Stefanson said the provincial government will spend $10 million to deploy 24 additional police officers in Winnipeg’s downtown.
The funding is part of the province’s $52 million, two-year violent crime strategy, which was first announced in Budget 2023 on March 7.
According to the province, the new officers will be dedicated to “proactive downtown safety measures.” The government will also expand the surveillance camera network downtown by adding 75 cameras and increasing lighting.
The expanded camera network will also be made available to the Downtown Safety Community Partnership through a collaboration with Winnipeg Police.
The Progressive Conservative government also intends to open a centralized community safety office in the core and provide funding to the Winnipeg Police Service to purchase “all purpose vehicles” to respond to incidents in the downtown.
Man slain in Waywayseecappo

A homicide investigation has been launched after a 23-year-old man was found dead outside of a residence in Waywayseecappo First Nation.
Manitoba First Nation Police Service said Thursday officers at the reserve’s detachment were responding to a disturbance on July 5 at about 1:30 a.m. when the man’s body was found with serious injuries.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and RCMP are investigating.
Police charge second suspect in months-old slaying
2:09 PM
Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a second suspect believed to be connected to a months-old Main Street slaying.
Homicide investigators arrested Keith Michael McKay, 27, on Wednesday, charging him with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Vincent Brian Kipling, 31.
Kipling was found suffering from stab wounds near Stella Avenue and Main Street on May 10. Later that month, 38-year-old Aaron Wayne Azure was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
Both men remain in custody.
