Homicide investigation launched in death of 64-year-old

10:11 AM

A homicide investigation is ongoing following the death of a 64-year-old man in West Broadway.

Winnipeg Police Service officers found Marcel Alphonse Painchaud dead when they responded to a report of a male assaulted in a residential suite in the 300 block of Langside Street at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

The homicide unit is asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

NDP leader supports landfill search

2:14 PM

Manitoba NDP Leader Wab Kinew says he supports a search of the Prairie Green Landfill for the remains of murdered Indigenous women.

“We have to try,” Kinew said Monday at an unrelated press conference.

Kinew called out Premier Heather Stefanson’s refusal to support a search for the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran as “dismissive” and “hurtful.”

The premier is trying to brand herself as tough on crime, but her response to victims of what he called one of the worst crimes in Manitoba history — the alleged serial killing of Indigenous women — calls into question her credibility and commitment to reconciliation, Kinew said.

Fun Mountain fire under investigation

2:38 PM

A fire which gutted a building at the former Fun Mountain water slide park is under investigation.

Brian Seaton, fire chief in the RM of Springfield, said on Monday the fire broke out Sunday at around 3 a.m.

Seaton said the fire was fully involved when crews from two of the department’s fire halls arrived.

Fun Mountain closed during the pandemic and the property, which was seized by a receiver, has a new owner. Most of the slides have been removed.
