Man drowns at South Indian Lake

1:57 PM

A 33-year-old man from Thompson is dead after he drowned near a remote, northern community Monday evening.

Mounties in South Indian Lake, located roughly 1,075 kilometres north of Winnipeg, responded to reports of a possible drowning around 7:15 p.m., RCMP said in a release Tuesday.

Investigators learned the victim had been swimming in South Indian Lake when he began to struggle. A 30-year-old man attempted to save the man by putting on a life-jacket, swimming out to him and holding him above the water.

Community members brought both men to shore by boat, but the victim was not responsive. RCMP arrived shortly after, and the man was transported to a nearby nursing station where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The victim was not wearing a life-jacket at the time of the drowning. His death will be investigated with an autopsy, police said.
