Wanted home invasion suspect accused of more crimes

11:34 AM

A suspect who is wanted for a violent home invasion in Selkirk on June 28 has been accused of other crimes while he’s been at large, RCMP say.

Justice Langlois, 28, was allegedly involved in a pursuit with officers June 30.

People who see him are asked to police immediately and not approach him.

Police previously arrested two other suspects in the home invasion, in which a gunshot was fired at a homeowner, who was not injured.

ManyFest cancelled for 2023

12:02 PM

After more than a decade of downtown street festivals, ManyFest has called off its 2023 event scheduled for the second weekend in September.

In a social media post Friday, organizers announced the annual event at Broadway and Memorial Park had been cancelled due to “a number of operational factors,” while indicating ManyFest may return in the future.

ManyFest is co-hosted by True North Sports and Entertainment and local production company Smith Events, in collaboration with the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.

The free September festival has been running since 2010 and featured live local music, a food truck competition and family and pet friendly activities.

No headway in blockade talks

12:30 PM

Lawyers representing the city and Indigenous protestors have told a judge they could not reach an agreement in an ongoing dispute over a blockade at the Brady Road landfill.

King’s Bench Justice Sheldon Lanchberry urged the parties yesterday to have further discussions in the hopes of finding a compromise that would not require court intervention and the forced removal of protestors.

“My friend and I have had some (discussions), but as of now we are not in a position to put an agreement forward,” City of Winnipeg lawyer Ashley Pledger told Lanchberry Friday morning.

The city filed a notice of application for a court injunction Tuesday, to halt the group’s week-long blockade of the main road leading to the landfill.

Advocates for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people are blocking the road, demanding governments support searches of Winnipeg-area landfills for human remains.

The action was spurred by the province’s refusal last week to support such a search of the privately owned Prairie Green Landfill, north of Winnipeg, for the remains of Indigenous women Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran.

Lanchberry will rule at 1 p.m. whether to grant protestors an adjournment and whether he will impose an interim injunction.
