Kuntz ties provincial record with third straight men’s amateur title
4:13 PM
A clutch birdie on the final hole propelled Breezy Bend’s Braxton Kuntz into rare company, sealing his third straight Manitoba men’s amateur title at Oak Island Resort on Saturday.
R.J. Reith (1935-37) and Todd Fanning (1990-92) are the only other players in the 112-year history of the tournament to rattle off a three-peat.
Kuntz, 19, poured in five birdies en route to a three-under 69 in the final round of the 54-hole event to edge Elmhurst’s Ryan McMillan by one stroke. Kuntz’s three-day total of 205 (11-under par) is also the lowest stroke total in tournament history, shattering the mark he set at Elmhurst last year (209).
McMillan, who started the day two shots back of Kuntz, came up just short despite firing a sizzling 68 that included six birdies. Fanning, a member of Niakwa making his first start in the event since 2018, finished solo third at seven-under par while out-of-towners Bailey Bjornson (Surrey, B.C.) and Chris Knoop (Moose Jaw, SK) tied for fourth at six-under.
