Logan Avenue closed due to overnight fire, crews still on scene
9:30 AM
Logan Avenue and Alexander Avenue between Arlington Street and McPhillips Street are closed after a fire broke out in a commercial property in the 900 block of Logan Avenue overnight Sunday. Pedestrians and drivers are asked to avoid the area.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a significant fire at 1:36 a.m. Crews called for back up due to the size and scale of the fire.
Firefighters are attacking the fire from the outside using aerial ladders and hand-held hose lines. One firefighter sustained a minor injury but did not require to go to hospital.
Six homes on Alexander Avenue have been temporarily evacuated as a precaution. The WFPS crews are expected to be on scene throughout the day.
People living nearby are advised to close their doors and windows to protect their homes’ air quality.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
MLL to close seven more liquor stores
2:36 PM
Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries announced Sunday that seven additional liquor stores will close until further notice, starting Monday 7 a.m.
In addition to the closures already announced, stores in Carman, Fort Garry, Morden, Park West, Portage La Prairie East, Swan River and Tuxedo Park Shopping Centre will remain closed indefinitely, the Crown corporation said in a media release.
“MBLL must reduce the number of Liquor Marts open for business to ensure we can effectively manage allocating limited inventory to the remaining open locations,” the release read.
Many liquor stores will still be open this weekend, MLL said.
The closures come amid a wage dispute between MLL and the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union.
