Mitchell man killed in highway crash
12:39 PM
An 81-year-old man is dead after his pickup truck was hit from behind by a semi-trailer.
The incident happened on Highway 52, just west of Provincial Road 216, in the Rural Municipality of Hanover at about 2:05 p.m. Tuesday.
RCMP investigators believe a semi-trailer driven by a 43-year-old Steinbach man was travelling westbound when it hit the pickup truck, which was also headed west. The pickup truck appeared to be moving slowly and might have come to a near-stop in the westbound lane when it was hit, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.
The driver of the pickup truck, who lived in Mitchell, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-trailer suffered minor injuries, RCMP said.
Mounties are investigating the collision.

Hiker rescued from Mantario Trail
2:54 PM
A hiker in distress was rescued from the Mantario Trail Monday, in a joint effort between the RCMP, STARS air ambulance and conservation officers.
Around 5:25 p.m., Mounties in Lac du Bonnet received a report that a 40-year-old woman was experiencing a medical incident on the trail, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.
The trail is located in the Whiteshell Provincial Park and stretches roughly 60 kilometres through rugged terrain. RCMP partnered with STARS to locate the woman, but the air ambulance was unable to land and retrieve her.
Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, RCMP dispatched another, smaller helicopter. The rescue attempt was successful, and the woman was brought to Lac du Bonnet to receive emergency care.
Conservation officers familiar with the region provided advice to police and first-responders, police said.
