Suspect arrested after Portage Avenue stabbing
9:09 AM
Police have charged a 19-year-old man with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon after a 34-year-old man was stabbed early Sunday.
The stabbing happened in the 600 block of Portage Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. The suspect walked away while the victim collapsed, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday. Passersby helped, police said.
The victim was stabbed in the upper body and was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Police said the investigation found “the victim and another male unknown to him became involved in a physical altercation. The suspect then produced a knife and stabbed the victim to the upper body.”
A suspect has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon and was detained in custody.
IIU investigating after man dies in custody
10:31 AM
Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died while in custody in Brandon.
On Aug. 20, the Brandon Police Service alerted the Independent Investigation Unit that a man died after being arrested for fleeing police, breaching a release order and drug-related offences. While in custody, the man displayed “unusual behaviour,” prompting police to call emergency services, the IIU said in a release Tuesday.
“The male’s condition deteriorated rapidly and he was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he was declared deceased a short time later,” the release said.
The IIU has assumed the investigation and are asking anybody with information to call 1-844-667-6060.

Illnesses cancel Tuesday’s performance of The Little Mermaid
11:32 AM
Rainbow Stage has cancelled its Tuesday evening performance of Disney’s The Little Mermaid after cast members have fallen ill.
The number of sick performers has exceeded the city theatre company’s group of understudies, Rainbow Stage’s website says.
The website, rainbowstage.ca, includes a link to a form that ticketholders can fill out to obtain tickets to another performance. It is also providing refunds to ticketholders who are unable to attend a future show.
The Little Mermaid’s run is scheduled to continue until Sept. 3.
