Fire guts Elmwood Church
8:53 AM
An Elmwood church built in 1911 is believed to be “a complete loss” after a fire early Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were sent to the Iglesia de Dios Pentecostes at 420 Tweed Ave. at 3:54 a.m.
Crews were unable to enter the building and fought the blaze from outside. Firefighters used aerial ladders to extinguish the blaze, and a drone to help direct water streams and find hot spots.
The fire was declared under control at 5:49 a.m.
A firefighter suffered an injury while on scene and was transported to hospital in stable condition.
A neighbouring home was evacuated as a precaution.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the building partially collapsed.
Watt Street is closed between Thames and Riverton avenues, and Tweed Avenue is closed from Elmwood Road to Allan Street.
The building was known as St. Paul’s Lutheran Church from its construction until it was sold in 1976, a 2009 historical report states.

MPI says union rejected contract offer

Manitoba Public Insurance says the union that represents its 1,700 workers has rejected its latest contract offer, paving the way for a strike.
MPI said it offered to proceed directly to binding arbitration, but the union rejected that.
MGEU has not responded to the Crown corporation’s media release.
The union said last week its members voted in favour of strike action, but no date has been set.
Liquor workers reach tentative deal
