Firefighters injured while battling fire on Austin Street North

Five firefighters were injured while battling a fire in a vacant house on Austin Street North Sunday, according to a news release.

At 12:45 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the scene where crews saw smoke and flames coming from the house. The fire was attacked from the inside, and brought under control at 2:49 a.m.

Three firefighters sustained minor injuries and paramedics transported two firefighters to hospital in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Man, 38, shot fatally on Furby Street

A 38-year-old Winnipeg man was shot fatally in the 500 block of Furby Street Saturday, according to a news release.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in a multi-room residence where they found the victim, Cory Roger Roulette, unresponsive with a gunshot wound, police said.

Patrol officers provided emergency medical care to the victim before ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries. The suspect(s) fled before police arrived.

The Homicide Unit has assumed the investigation. Police is asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS, or online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

Oxford House RCMP investigating suspicious death

Oxford House RCMP is investigating a suspicious death of a 22-year-old man that took place at a nursing station, according to a media release Sunday.

On August 26, 2023, at 2:20 am, officers responded to a report of a deceased man  at the nursing station where they found the victim with serious injuries who had been pronounced deceased.

Oxford House RCMP, along with RCMP Major Crime Services and Forensic Identification Services, are investigating.

MLL workers accept deal, strike ends

MGEU members from the MBLL have vowed to accept the latest deal on the table, effectively ending the strike, which began on July 19.

According to the deal, members of the bargaining unit will receive wage increases of approx. 12 per cent or more over four years. All Liquor Mart stores will be open tomorrow.

“We knew a deal was to be had at the bargaining table, and our members proved just that,” said MGEU president Kyle Ross. “We’d like to thank everyone for their patience, support and solidarity during this extremely difficult round of bargaining.”

Meanwhile, in a press release, MLL CEO Gerry Sul said that the Crown corporation was looking forward to welcoming the employees back to work as ” we resume the full services Manitobans count on as quickly as possible.”

The MGEU represents approximately 1,400 members at MBLL.

Two suspects arrested for string of thefts

Two men from Winnipeg have been arrested for a string of thefts over the past two months, according to a news release Sunday.

On Friday evening police responded to a report of break and enter at a commercial property in the 2400 block of Main Street involving two suspects. Two suspects were arrested without incident.

Investigation by the Major Crimes Unit revealed the suspects had tried and failed to enter the commercial property, causing over $5,000 in damage.

Further investigation linked the two suspects to another break and enter on the same day, which occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Main Street. The suspects had gained entry by prying open an entry door, causing approximately $1,000 in damage. They fled after confronted by the business owner, who was present inside at the time of the incident.

A .410 calibre round of ammunition and a stolen Manitoba Metis Federation card not in either’s name was seized from the suspects. The suspects were also linked to two thefts at commercial businesses in the 1400 block and 1300 block of Henderson Highway on July 29. One of the suspects also stole three cars which have since been recovered.

A 27-year-old man is charged with offences including mischief over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of Firearm.

Another 27-year-old Winnipeg man is charged with offences including mischief over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two counts of  breaking and entering and three counts of  theft of motor vehicle.

Both were detained in custody.

Crews respond to fires on Blake Street and Edmonton Street

The Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service received reports of two fires which broke out on Blake Street and Edmonton Street Sunday, according to a news release.

At 10:49 a.m., a fire broke out in an apartment complex in the 300 block of Blake Street. The fire was tackled from inside and brought under control at 11:04 a.m.

All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. One person was taken to hospital in stable condition. The incident is under investigation.

Later, at 1:01 p.m., another fire broke out in a high-rise building in the 200 block of Edmonton Street. Due to the life safety risks associated with a high-rise building, crews called a second alarm.

At the scene, the building’s sprinkler system was engaged. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the building, declaring it under control within 45 minutes.

All affected occupants safely self-evacuated. No injuries were reported. The city’s social services team helped displaced residents find temporary housing.

Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental and related to cooking.

Texas wins Manitoba Open

Hayden Springer is the 2023 Manitoba Open champion.

The 26-year-old from Texas finished the 72-hole tournament at Southwood Golf and Country Club at 21-under par. That left him three strokes ahead of runner-up Etienne Papineau of Quebec.

American Sam Choi was third at 17-under, while a trio of golfers — Canadians Joey Savoie and Johnny Travale and Charles Wang of China — finished tied for fourth at 16-under.

Selkirk’s Travis Fredborg was the lone Manitoban in the field to make the cut and finished tied for 49th and three-under.
