High-risk sex offender released
12:29 PM
Police issued a warning Tuesday, alerting the public to the release of a convicted sex offender considered a high risk to reoffend.
Winston George Thomas, 46, was released from Headingley Correctional Centre Tuesday and is expected to live in Winnipeg, the joint Winnipeg Police Service-RCMP Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit said in a statement.
Thomas has a lengthy criminal record that includes convictions for violent sexual assault involving a 13-year-old girl, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and numerous breaches of probation and recognizance orders.
Police said although Thomas participated in some sex-offender programming behind bars, he’s still considered a risk to commit further sex-related crimes against both children and adults.
Anyone with information about Thomas is asked to call the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at (431) 489-8056, the Winnipeg Police Service at (204) 986-6222, RCMP or Manitoba Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-8477 or toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.

Man injured in chainsaw attack: RCMP
3:21 PM
An attack with a chainsaw injured one man in Somerset, Man. and led to one arrest, according to RCMP.
Around 1:25 p.m. Monday, Manitou RCMP officers responded to a report that a suspect had broken into a home in the community about 130 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg and assaulted a man, using bear spray and a chainsaw, Mounties say.
Officers located a 36-year-old man at the home, who went to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the suspect had fled the scene, RCMP say.
Mounties say officers arrested a suspect shortly after the incident and seized a mini electric chainsaw. A 73-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault, breaking and entering and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was remanded into custody.
The incident is still under investigation.
