Semi trailer load hits Hwy. 10 bridge

10:56 AM

A semi-trailer and its load of farm equipment stuck under a highway bridge had to be removed by a tow truck on Thursday.

Spruce Plains RCMP said on Friday the truck became lodged under a CP Rail bridge over Highway 10 near Minnedosa in the RM of Minto-Odanah at about 11:35 a.m.

RCMP said a tow truck was able to pull free the truck, but traffic was affected for about two hours.

No one was injured but CP Rail examined the bridge and found minor damage to it.

City’s financial forecast expected to greatly improve

11:07 AM

The City of Winnipeg’s financial outlook has greatly improved.

The city now expects to end the year with a $1.2-million deficit for its tax-supported budget, based on financial data up to June 30, according to a new finance report. That marks a major improvement since the first quarter of the year, when the city predicted it would complete 2023 with a $27-million shortfall.

Winnipeg Transit expects a separate $2.2-million shortfall.

Coun. Jeff Browaty, chairman of the finance committee, said most of the improvement is due to substantial savings in employer contributions to the Winnipeg police pension plan, since that fund has grown due to increased interest rates.

Perimeter Aviation plane goes off runway in remote Ontario spot

11:26 AM

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating after a Perimeter Aviation flight went off the runway while landing at a remote spot in northeastern Ontario on Thursday.

Three investigators are set to arrive at the Detour Lake mine site on Saturday morning, the TSB said Friday.

The incident happened at about 8:05 a.m. CT and involved a LP Fairchild SA227-DC Metro aircraft, the TSB said.

The plane departed from Toronto Pearson International Airport and landed in North Bay before proceeding to the mine site. It was carrying two crew members and eight passengers at the time of the incident, the TSB said.

Perimeter Aviation is based in Winnipeg.

Police officer charged with threats, criminal harassment

12:38 PM

A Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer has been charged with uttering threats and two counts of criminal harassment, following an investigation by the province’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigation Unit said the incidents are alleged to have occurred between October 2019 and November 2022 while the officer was on duty.

Const. Kelvin (Dale) McKay was released on an undertaking. He is scheduled to appear in Virden provincial court Nov. 3.

RCMP identify teen sought in Thompson slaying

3:56 PM

RCMP have released the name of a 16-year-old boy charged with manslaughter after a man was fatally shot in Thompson, Man., last week.

Police announced on Sept. 2 that they had arrested two men in connection with the killing of a 33-year-old man on Ashberry Place on Aug. 30.

One man was charged with second-degree murder, while the other was charged with robbery and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

At the time, RCMP also said they were seeking an unnamed teen for manslaughter. Mounties made a successful application to a judge to identify the teen “as there is reason to believe that the young person may be a danger to others,” RCMP said in a news release Friday.

RCMP believe the teen, Glen Harper of Bunibonibee Cree Nation, might be in Thompson or Bunibonibee, located 180 km southeast of Thompson.

A third man, 34-year-old Ashley Clipping of Winnipeg, is also sought on two counts of assault causing bodily harm and has not yet been arrested.
