Two firefighters injured in Gagnon Street fire

Two firefighters were injured while tackling a fire which broke out in a three-storey apartment building in the 500 block of Gagnon Street Sunday morning.

At 4:55 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the location of the fire where they saw smoke and flames coming from the building.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside while ensuring residents were safely evacuating.

The fire was brought under control at 7:20 a.m. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries but did not require to be taken to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The city’s social services team helped displaced residents find temporary accommodation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Man, 23, fatally shot on Mountain Avenue

Winnipeg police say a man is dead following an early Sunday morning shooting in central Winnipeg.

In a release, police said they responded to a call about a man suffering from a gunshot wound in the 500 block of Mountain Avenue at 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

A 23-year-old man was transported to hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

The homicide unit is investigating and anyone with information is asked to call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or make a report online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

Two dogs die in fire on Cordova Street

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire on Cordova Street Sunday afternoon, according to a news release.

At 1:22 p.m., the crews arrived on scene where they found a two-storey home on fire in the 700 block of Cordova Street.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, declaring it under control at 1:49 p.m. All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived, the release said.

Two dogs at the residence died as a result of smoke exposure. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
