Nearly 200 candidates are in the running for 57 seats in the upcoming provincial election, with the Liberal party falling eight candidates short of a full slate.
According to Elections Manitoba, 189 people were registered as official candidates in the 43rd general election, as of 1 p.m. Monday, the deadline to submit nominations.
Both the New Democratic Party of Manitoba and Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba fielded full slates of 57 candidates.

According to Elections Manitoba, 189 people were registered as official candidates in the 43rd general election, as of 1 p.m. Monday, the deadline to submit nominations.
The Manitoba Liberal Party nominated candidates in 49 electoral districts — unable to field candidates in Brandon West, Dauphin, Dawson Trail, Flin Flon, Lac du Bonnet, Red River North, Selkirk, and Swan River.
“Unfortunately, we had a few candidates fall through the application process last-minute,” Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont said in a statement late Monday.
“While I regret that not every Manitoban will have a Manitoba Liberal candidate to vote for, at the end of the day, our focus has been on fielding very strong candidates in constituencies where we have a strong chance of winning, of which we have many,” he said.
“This is an incredibly strong slate of candidates who can contend and win at the constituency level.”
The Green Party of Manitoba nominated 13 candidates, including eight in Winnipeg.
The Keystone Party of Manitoba nominated five candidates: in Agassiz, Interlake-Gimli, La Verendrye, Swan River, and Turtle Mountain. The right-wing, populist political organization officially launched in July 2022, with its sights set on seats vacated by retiring PC MLAs.
The Communist Party of Canada (Manitoba) also nominated five candidates, all in Winnipeg electoral districts.
The Manitoba Party (formerly Manitoba Forward Party) did not nominate any candidates, after seven ran under its banner in 2019.

Three independent candidates are also running: Martin Stadler (Seine River), Amarjit Singh (Southdale) and Patrick Allard (St. Johns).
Elections Manitoba is expected to issue a finalized list of candidates Tuesday.
Advance voting will run for eight days, beginning Sept. 23. The provincial election is Oct. 3.
