Rifles suffer third straight defeat

9:55 AM

The Winnipeg Rifles keep missing the target.

The junior football squad suffered a 33-21 defeat to the previously winless Calgary Colts in the Alberta city Sunday afternoon.

Winnipeg (1-3) has posted three consecutive defeats since opening the season with a win over the Edmonton Huskies.

Rifles quarterback Thomas Hubbard completed 12 of 31 passes for 229 yards, including a touchdown toss to Kaiden Banfield.

Adam Fast also scored a TD for the visitors on a fake field-goal attempt.

The Rifles host the Regina Thunder (3-1) this Sunday (1 p.m.) at Maple Grove Field.

Winnipeg fire crews battle two residential blazes

10:54 AM

Winnipeg fire crews battled a pair of residential blazes that broke out in a roughly three-hour span Monday morning.

An injured person was taken to hospital in stable condition, after a fire was reported in a house in the 700 block of Alexander Avenue shortly after 5:30 a.m., the city said in a news release.

The house was a total loss. The blaze also spread to two neighbouring homes.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m., crews were called to a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 700 block of Main Street.

The city said it helped find temporary accommodation for displaced residents.

Both fires remain under investigation.

Man arrested in Mountain Avenue shooting death

10:59 AM

Winnipeg police have arrested a man accused in the shooting death of a 23-year-old outside a home on Mountain Avenue early Sunday.

Everett Patterson King was shot outside the home on the 500 block of Mountain Avenue at about 12:45 a.m., police said Monday. Officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound. He died in hospital.

Homicide detectives have charged Dartanian Francesco Martin Packuluk, 21, with second-degree murder, police said.

Police believe the victim and the accused, who did not know each other, both went to a gathering at the home. After they left, police said, the two had another “encounter” that led to the shooting outside.

Police are still investigating and ask anyone with information on the incident or the people involved to call detectives at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Winnipeg Wine Festival rescheduled to January 2024

12:34 PM

The Winnipeg Wine Festival will uncork its public tastings in late January 2024.

The festival had been slated to take place in mid-September, but was postponed after unionized Manitoba Liquor Mart employees across the province went on strike in August.

The public tastings will take place Jan. 26 and 27 at the RBC Convention Centre, while the festival gala dinner will take place Jan. 25. Tickets purchased for the original dates are valid for the new dates, and refunds will be available for those unable to attend. More information is available at the Winnipeg Wine Festival website.

One injured in ATV crash at Ellice Avenue and Young Street

1:24 PM

A person illegally driving an all-terrain vehicle on a city street was seriously injured in a crash while evading police, the province’s police watchdog says.

The ATV collided with two vehicles at Ellice Avenue and Young Street, behind the University of Winnipeg, shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said Monday afternoon. Officers had seen the ATV on McMicken Street near Sargent Avenue and followed it, trying to get it to stop, before the crash.

The driver of the ATV was transported to Health Sciences Centre with serious injuries. The drivers of the other two vehicles did not require hospitalization, the IIU said.

The IIU is asking witnesses or anyone with video that might help investigators to call 1-844-667-6060.

The Winnipeg Police Service did not release details about the incident.

Crews were called to the scene, between Maryland and Burnell streets, shortly after 2 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Corydon buildings evacuated after gas leak

4:28 PM

A ruptured line resulted in a natural gas leak near the 2000 block of Corydon Avenue Monday afternoon.

Firefighters evacuated nearby commercial buildings at around 2:14 p.m., and people in a nearby daycare stayed in the building as the natural gas levels were monitored to ensure the readings stayed at zero parts per million.
