Three charged with murder

Manitoba RCMP have arrested three males and charged them with murder.

Mounties did not say which homicide the males are charged in.

Police are holding a news conference on the arrests later Tuesday morning.

Lowry named as new Jets captain

Adam Lowry is the new captain of the Winnipeg Jets.

The 30-year-old will be officially unveiled at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning in an announcement being held at Canada Life Centre. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and coach Rick Bowness will also be in attendance to speak.

Lowry is the third “C” in 2.0 history, following Andrew Ladd and, most recently, Blake Wheeler. The St. Louis-born, Calgary-raised centre was drafted in the third round, 67th-overall, in 2011 and has played 621 regular-season and 44 playoff games in his career with the Jets so far.

He has 102 goals, 120 assists and 349 combined penalty minutes in that span.

Winnipeg School Division board elects 2023-24 chair and vice-chair

The Winnipeg School Division’s board of trustees announced the results of its 2023-24 term chairperson and vice-chairperson election Tuesday morning.

Tamara Kuly (based in ward seven) will be chairperson and Kathy Heppner (based in ward three) will be the WSD board of trustees’ vice-chairperson.

Kuly and Heppner will head the board that sets policy for the school division. There are 79 schools and nearly 30,000 students in the WSD.

William Avenue vacant house catches fire

A vacant house in the 900 block of William Avenue went up in flames Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were on scene at around 7:08 a.m. and searched the house. There were no occupants inside and no injuries reported. The fire was declared under control just under an hour later.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Book of Mormon tickets on sale Sept. 18

Sept. 18 is the date for those who wish to book their tickets for the four-show run of The Book of Mormon at the Centennial Concert Hall Jan. 5-7.

Tickets for the Broadway Across Canada presentation will go on sale at 10 a.m. at centennialconcerthall.com or by phone at 204-949-3999. Prices were not announced. The four shows include three evening shows as well as a Saturday matinee on Jan. 6.

The musical satire by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and songwriter Robert Lopez, which lampoons the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has been a hit on Broadway since it opened in 2011 and a previous week-long stint at the concert hall brought in $1.4 million in receipts, a record at the venue.

William Prince plays concert hall March 2

William Prince is bringing his Stand in the Joy tour to the Centennial Concert Hall March 2, 2024.

The Peguis First Nation country-folk singer, who calls Winnipeg home, is a Juno Award winner and picked up two Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2021. His 2023 album, Stand in the Joy, launched a tour of the United States in the spring that included appearances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and alongside Willie Nelson at the country legend’s Luck Reunion in Texas.

Concert hall hosts Bill Nye the Science Guy

Bill Nye, who became known as Bill Nye the Science Guy from his PBS series in the 1990s, will discuss climate change at an appearance at the Centennial Concert Hall March 3, 2024.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at centennialconcerthall.com or by phone at 204-949-3999. Prices range from $71.50 to 127.50. There are also VIP meet-and-greet tickets available for $275.

While the author and mechanical engineer is touring the show The End is Nye, he will discuss ways how individuals can make a difference in climate change, using science.

Homicide unit investigating after injured man dies

The homicide unit is investigating after an injured man was found in a lane behind Lipton Street on Monday.

The 56-year-old was found at 4:30 p.m. in the rear lane of the 600 block of Lipton. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and died from his injuries.

An autopsy is pending, the Winnipeg Police Service said Tuesday afternoon. No arrests have been made, and the homicide unit is investigating.
