City and Colour, Nathaniel Rateliff team up for arena show

Roots artists City and Colour and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats are bringing a 13-stop cross-Canada tour to the Canada Life Centre Feb. 15, 2024.

Tickets go on sale at Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca, although there are presales being held all week, beginning with ones Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at cityandcolour.com and nathanielrateliff.com. Prices haven’t been announced.

City and Colour, a three-time Juno Award winner, is the stage name for Ontario singer-songwriter Dallas Green. Rateliff is from Denver and has No. 1 hits on charts in the United States and the 2018 single You Worry Me also reached No. 1 on Canada’s rock charts.

Ontario singer-songwriter Ruby Waters opens the show.

Rallies call on governments to search landfills

Manitobans joined supporters across the country to call on the provincial and federal governments to search the Prairie Road and Brady Green landfills for the remains of two Indigenous women Monday afternoon.

Several hundred supporters chanted “search the landfill” on the steps of the Legislative Building at noon, joining over a dozen cities holding rallies Canada-wide, including one at Parliament Hill. The day was organized by the families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, who police believe were dumped at the Prairie Green Landfill after being killed.

Organizers are also calling for the search of another unidentified woman, named Buffalo Woman by Indigenous leadership, believed to be in the Brady Road Landfill.

Neither government has committed to funding a search of either landfill.

Jets reveal training camp roster and schedule

The Winnipeg Jets revealed the list of six goalies, 19 defencemen and 31 forwards that will compete in training camp, which officially opens with on-ice sessions on Thursday at 10 a.m.

To start training camp, the Jets will split players into two groups: Team Selanne and Team Numminen.

The Jets first preseason game is Sept. 24 against the Edmonton Oilers, with a return match slated for Canada Life Centre a day later.

Woman charged with uttering threats in spitting incident

A woman is facing charges after she allegedly told RCMP officers she had a communicable disease and spat towards them.

Mounties were sent to the scene of a dispute on 18th Street Northwest in Portage la Prairie at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday. A woman ran out of the home and was caught nearby after a chase. She was found to be violating conditions of her release and was arrested.

The 33-year-old Long Plain First Nation resident was placed in the back of a police vehicle. RCMP said she became aggressive, threatened to spit on the officers, told them she had a communicable disease and then spat towards officers.

She is charged with two counts each of uttering threats to cause bodily harm and failing to comply. She was remanded in custody.

Larocque goes No. 2 in PWHL Draft

Blue-liner Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne has been chosen with the No. 2 overall pick by the Toronto franchise at the inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft.

The 35-year-old Larocque, who has won two gold medals and a silver at the Winter Olympics, has been a member of the Canadian national women’s team since 2011.

Ottawa takes Deloraine’s Bell eighth overall

Deloraine’s Ashton Bell was chosen in the second round (eighth overall) by the Ottawa franchise in today’s Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft in Toronto.

Bell, a 23-year-old blue-liner, recently completed a five-year NCAA career at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Man shot with improvised gun on Martha Street

A woman was arrested after a man was shot on Martha Street early last Thursday.

Winnipeg police patrol officers were approached by the victim just after 4 a.m. on the 100 block of Martha Street, between the Disraeli Freeway and Henry Avenue, police said on Monday.

Police called for paramedics, who found the 42-year-old man had been shot in the lower body, before taking him to hospital in unstable condition, police said. He was later upgraded to stable.

Officers found a suspect nearby and arrested her, before major crimes investigators took over. They found that two groups of people had gotten into an argument, which escalated to the point the suspect allegedly pulled out an improvised gun and shot it at the victim, police said.

Police allege the suspect was found with the improvised gun and 13 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition.

A 23-year-old woman has been charged with aggravated assault, a slew of firearms charges, six counts of fail to comply with a release order and on four unrelated arrest warrants. She was detained.

Campbell goes No. 14 to Toronto

Brandon goaltender Kristen Campbell has been chosen in the third round (14th overall) by Toronto in today’s Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft.

The 25-year-old was a member of Canada’s gold-medal winning effort at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Jets fall 4-2 to Flames in Young Stars finale

The Winnipeg Jets closed out the 2023 Young Stars Classic with a 4-2 loss to the Calgary Flames, leaving them with a record of 1-2 at the annual prospects showcase in Penticton, B.C.

Nikita Chibrikov led the way offensively, chipping in a goal and an assist, while Elias Salomonsson added a goal.

Thomas Milic and Dominic DiVincentiis split the duties in goal for the Jets, who officially open training camp on Thursday.

Montreal selects Winnipegger Tabin

Winnipegger Kati Tabin was the fourth Manitoban to be chosen in today’s Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft in Toronto.

The 26-year-old defender was chosen in the fifth round (30th overall) by Montreal.

Schroeder selected by New York

Elm Creek’s Corinne Schroeder, a 24-year-old goaltender, was chosen by New York in the sixth round (33rd overall) at the Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft.
