Crews respond to fire in Tyndall Park

9:50 AM

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the Tyndall Park neighbourhood shortly after 6 p.m. Friday for a report of a fire.

When crews arrived at the single-family home on Ostafiew Farm Road, smoke was coming from the house. The fire was under control at 6:30 p.m.

It’s believed the fire was accidental as a result of unattended cooking. Damage estimates are unavailable.

Orange Shirt Day events underway downtown

11:58 AM

Thousands of people have gathered at The Forks to form a procession in recognition of the third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The parade, led by riders on horseback and accompanied by a police escort, will head north down Main Street before turning onto westbound Portage Avenue and ending at the Canada Life Centre.

Sections of northbound Main Street between York and Portage avenues are closed to accommodate the crowd, as well as the eastbound lanes of Portage Avenue.

Wa-Say Healing Centre has organized the event, which will culminate in a ceremonial powwow.

Similar demonstrations are ongoing across the country, with the day recognized federally as a statutory holiday.

It has not achieved such status provincially.
