Bag of medications stolen from emergency scene found

8:08 AM

A bag filled with medications stolen from fire-paramedic crews at an emergency scene this weekend has been found.

The medical response bag was taken while crews were at a bus stop in the area of Sargent Avenue and Sherbrook Street on Saturday afternoon.

None of the medications in the kit contained narcotics, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Sunday night.

The WFPS is conducting an internal investigation of the incident. They had warned the public that taking any amount of the medications in the kit without medical supervision could be dangerous or fatal.

Jets make few predictable cuts

11:08 AM

There were no surprises as the Winnipeg Jets trimmed three players from their training camp roster this morning.

Wyatt Bongiovanni and Chaz Lucius have been assigned to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. The Jets also announced that forward Colby Barlow has been returned to his junior team, the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack.

The Jets now have 18 forwards, 11 defencemen, and three goalies left in camp.

Winnipeg plays in Calgary tonight (8 p.m.), the fifth of its six pre-season games. The Jets-Flames battle is not being televised but is being streamed on winnipegjets.com.

Illness running through Jets room

11:24 AM

The hits keep coming for the Winnipeg Jets.

Forwards Mark Scheifele and Morgan Barron have joined the growing list of players battling illness and won’t play a preseason game tonight in Calgary as originally scheduled.

Kyle Connor and Gabe Vilardi have also been under the weather recently and also won’t be in the lineup against the Flames, although both skated on their own Monday morning.

Forward Colby Barlow also missed most of training camp with a bug. He was returned to his junior team this weekend.

Brad Lambert and Dominic Toninato, who were both sent to the Manitoba Moose on Sunday, will be recalled to take Scheifele and Barron’s spots tonight against the Calgary Flames.

Winnipeg will also sit out several players battling minor injuries including Nikolaj Ehlers, Nate Schmidt, Declan Chisholm, Elias Salomonsson, Henri Nikkanen and Danny Zhilkin.

The Jets wrap up their six-game preseason slate on Thursday when they host the Ottawa Senators at Canada Life Centre. The regular-season begins Oct. 11.

Jets lose Jansen Harkins on waivers

1:11 PM

The Winnipeg Jets have lost forward Jansen Harkins on waivers after the Pittsburgh Penguins made a claim Monday afternoon.

Harkins, 26, would have been sent to the Manitoba Moose had he cleared. The 2015 second-round draft pick played 154 career NHL games with the Jets, with 13 goals and 14 assists in that span.

Harkins cleared waivers on two occasions last year and put up 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in 44 games with the Moose.

All of the other Jets players put on waivers Sunday — forwards Kristian Reichel, Dominic Toninato and Jeff Malott and defenceman Ashton Sautner — cleared.

Reichel was sent to the Moose on Monday, while the other three remain with Winnipeg, for now.

Defenceman Elias Salomonsson and forward Danny Zhilkin were also sent to the Moose.

Sprague marks record-high temperature

6:29 PM

The mercury hit 30 C in Sprague on Sunday, setting a high temperature record for Oct. 1 in the southeastern Manitoba community.

Sprague, which is situated near the Canada-U.S. border, north of Warroad, Minn., was Manitoba’s hotspot Sunday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Rose Carlsen said the previous hottest Oct. 1 in the community, which is about 180 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg, was in 1992 (29 C).

The high mark in Sprague was the only temperature record broken over the weekend, said Carlsen.

Carlsen said although the weekend was warm throughout the province’s south, such temperatures are not unusual for early fall.

“It was pretty warm for southeastern Manitoba, but not unheard of,” she said.
