Flames defeat Jets after late-game heroics

CALGARY — The Calgary Flames scored two late goals to beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-3 in NHL action tonight.

Elias Lindholm popped the puck over goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s shoulder with just 1:32 left in the third period.

Andrew Mangiapane scored an empty-net goal with just seconds left. It was his second tally of the night.

Mark Scheifele had pulled Winnipeg even at 3-3 with just under six minutes left in regulation time.

The Jets outshot the Flames 38-22.

Calgary led 2-1 and 3-2 at the period breaks.

Kyle Connor and Alex Iafallo also scored for the Jets.

Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar also potted goals for Calgary.

The Jets will now prepare for their home-opener Saturday afternoon against the visiting Florida Panthers.

Jets still down a goal in Calgary

11:00 PM

CALGARY — Rasmus Andersson’s shorthanded goal has lifted the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 lead over the Winnipeg Jets after two periods in NHL action tonight.

Goalie Jacob Markstrom made a brilliant save on Mark Scheifele and the Flames broke away, with Andersson beating Connor Hellebuyck at the 13:49 mark of the middle frame.

Alex Iafallo had scored his first goal as a Jet earlier in the period to even the game 2-2.

Calgary led 2-1 after the opening frame. MacKenzie Weegar and Andrew Mangiapane scored for the hosts, while Kyle Connor replied for Winnipeg.

The Jets have outplayed the hosts, leading 28-14 on the shot counter.

Markstrom robbed Cole Perfetti in the dying seconds of the period to preserve Calgary’s one-goal advantage.

Jets down 2-1 to Flames after first period

10:02 PM

CALGARY — The Winnipeg Jets trail the Calgary Flames 2-1 after the first period tonight in the 2023-24 NHL season-opener for both Western Conference squads.

Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar’s point shot through traffic beat goalie Connor Hellebuyck with just over two minutes left in the frame to snap a 1-1 tie.
Earlier, the Jets had several quality chances to open the scoring but fell behind 1-0 after surrendering a power-play goal by Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane at the 12:28 mark.
Winnipeg sniper Kyle Connor evened the contest just over two minutes later on a shot that squeezed through goalie Jacob Markstrom.
The Jets hold a 14-8 advantage in shots.

Dauphin man shot by trio riding BMX bikes: RCMP

12:45 PM

A Dauphin man was shot after three males on BMX bicycles approached him on the street on Tuesday night, RCMP say.

The Dauphin RCMP detachment were alerted at about 11 p.m. by the area hospital after the 43-year-old man showed up for medical care for a gunshot wound, Mounties say.

RCMP officers were told the victim had been walking near 1st Street SW and 4th Avenue SW at about 10 p.m., when he encountered the three on bikes. The suspects, police say, spoke to the victim before he was shot. The victim then went to the hospital, where his wound was treated as non-life threatening.

RCMP are asking anyone in the area to check home security footage to see if the suspects or victim were captured on tape. Mounties also ask anyone with information to call the detachment at 204-622-5020 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

Man accused of ditching weapons, cocaine after fleeing RCMP on dirt bike wanted

10:21 AM

A man accused of fleeing from RCMP while riding a dirt bike and carrying cocaine and weapons in Portage la Prairie last week is wanted on an arrest warrant.

RCMP say an officer on patrol on 3rd Street NE at about 7:25 p.m. on Oct. 4 spotted the dirt bike driving at a high speed turn onto Trenton Avenue. The officer, RCMP say, tried to pull the bike over with his emergency lights, but abandoned the chase due to the biker’s high speeds.

The Mountie saw the bike cross train tracks, where it fell over. The driver then dropped a backpack and ran off into a cornfield, RCMP say.

The officer found a knife and a set of brass knuckles in the bag and called for a police dog unit to assist, the RCMP say, but the driver had gotten into a vehicle and left the area. Other officers found cocaine and paraphernalia in the bag.

RCMP have issued a warrant for Dexter Roulette, 38 of Portage. Mounties ask anyone who knows where he might be to call the Portage detachment at 204-857-4445 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

RCMP HANDOUT Dexter Roulette is wanted by RCMP after a traffic incident on Oct. 4.

Second suspect arrested in Mulvey Avenue slaying

9:44 AM

A second man has been arrested in connection with the slaying of a man in a Fort Rouge apartment last month.

Jerrin MacIntyre, 28, of Winnipeg, has been charged with second-degree murder. He has been detained in custody.

Police said the suspect was arrested in the 600 block of Flora Street at about 11:55 p.m. Monday.

Damion Wayne Skrumeda, 46, was fatally shot in his basement apartment at 635 Mulvey Ave. on Sept. 13.

Police said they believe two suspects went to the apartment, confronted Skrumeda and shot him. Police said Skrumeda knew one of the suspects.

Warrants were issued for two suspects after the slaying. Randy Flett, 25, was arrested on Oct. 2 after an officer saw a stolen vehicle driving in the area of Pacific Avenue and Princess Street. Flett was charged with second-degree murder.

The Winnipeg Police Service said Wednesday that investigators do not expect any further arrests.
