Fire crews respond to downtown fires

11:32 AM

Two fires on Saturday, one in a hotel and the other in an apartment building, were extinguished by fire crews.

The first took place shortly after noon in a seven-storey hotel in the 500 block of Main Street. At 12:55 p.m., Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to a monitored fire alarm .

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke in the building. A fire was located in one of the suites, and had been kept under control by the building’s sprinkler system. Firefighters were quickly able to extinguish the remaining hot spots.

Some occupants of the building self-evacuated, while others were able to shelter in place; no injuries were reported.

The second blaze took place in a high-rise apartment building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street. At 11:49 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a monitored alarm.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke in the building. With the potential for high life hazards, a second alarm was called, increasing the number of crews on scene. Firefighters located the fire and quickly extinguished it, and then worked to ventilate the smoke from the building.

Residents were directed to shelter in place and no injuries were reported.
