Jets beat Blues 5-2

ST. LOUIS — Winnipeg’s top offensive line did the heavy lifting here Tuesday night as the Jets closed out a three-game road trip in style.

Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor scored power-play goals to spark the Jets to a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues in a battle of NHL Central Division rivals.

Connor had a pair of goals, his team-leading seventh and eighth, and chipped in an assist. Alex Iafallo supplied four assists and Scheifele added two helpers.

Neal Pionk notched his first goal of the year for the visitors, while Cole Perfetti scored into an empty net.

Robert Thomas and Brayden Schenn replied for the Blues.

The Jets improved to 6-4-2, while the Blues drop to 5-5-1.

The Jets now host five games over the next 11 days at their downtown home, beginning with the Nashville Predators on Thursday.

ST. LOUIS – The Winnipeg Jets have added to their lead and now enjoy a 3-1 advantage over the St. Louis Blues after two periods.

Kyle Connor scored on a power play in the middle frame to give the visitors a two-goal cushion. It was his team-leading seventh of the year.

Mark Scheifele and Neal Pionk scored in the first period, while Robert Thomas has the Blues goal.

Shots are 27-18 for the Jets through 40 minutes.

ST. LOUIS – The Winnipeg Jets have jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the St. Louis Blues after one period.

Mark Scheifele scored on the power play, then set up Neal Pionk at even strength to give the visitors a two-goal advantage. But Robert Thomas replied later in the frame for the home team.

Shots are 12-10 for St. Louis after 20 minutes.

This is the end of a three-game road trip for Winnipeg. They are 1-1-0 so far.

Man dead after combine harvester rollover

A 55-year-old man whose combine harvester rolled over into a water-filled slough last Friday died after being pulled from the icy water.

Russell RCMP were called to the rollover into the slough off of Provincial Road 592, near Road 140N, in the Rural Municipality of Riding Mountain West at about 4:50 p.m. on Nov. 3.

Mounties say investigators determined the man, who was from nearby Roblin, was headed south on PR 592 when his combine lost control on an ice-slicked downhill part of the road. The farm vehicle slid down a steep embankment and rolled onto its roof in the water, RCMP say.

A witness, who was driving a combine in front of the victim, stopped his vehicle and jumped in the water to pull the victim out and performed first aid, RCMP say, but emergency medical responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Fire damages high-rise suites

Seventeen suites in an apartment building on Carlton Street were damaged in a fire Tuesday morning.

Fire crews were sent to the 10-storey building at 9:56 a.m. and quickly extinguished the fire, then worked to ventilate smoke from the building.

Some residents exited the building, while others remained in their suites. A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to provide shelter for evacuees.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the suite where it originated, but 16 additional suites sustained water damage and remain empty.

Building management was working to arrange temporary accommodations for the displaced residents.

“Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said.

Search for missing boater continues

The RCMP’s underwater search team is helping to look for a Garden Hill First Nation man whose boat was found empty.

Harold Christopher Taylor, 42, was last seen Wednesday, when it is believed he took his boat to Wass Island to get firewood.

Community members began searching the island and the surrounding areas after Taylor failed to return. Searchers found his boat floating near the shoreline of another island.

The search has continued since then. Island Lake RCMP were contacted about the missing man Sunday.

The RCMP’s underwater recovery was set to help with the search Tuesday.

Taylor is described as 6-2 in height, 220 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black tuque, a black parka and dark-coloured ski pants, RCMP said.

Alan Doyle to perform March 5 at the Burt

Alan Doyle, the former frontman of the Great Big Sea, has set a March 5, 2024 date to play the Burton Cummings Theatre.

Tickets for the concert, part of a 44-city North American tour, go on sale Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. at livenation.com or ticketmaster.ca. A presale is scheduled for Nov. 8 at 10 a.m.

Alan Doyle, who is also an author, actor and producer as well as a solo artist, is touring with Canadian indie-pop artist Adam Baldwin.

Ice Cube ready to rap at arena Feb. 28

Ice Cube, the recording artist, actor, director and producer, will perform at the Canada Life Centre Feb. 28, 2024.

Tickets go on sale Nov. 10 at ticketmaster.ca, however there are presales scheduled for Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. Prices were not announved.

Ice Cube gained fame in 1988 with N.W.A., and the gangsta rap group’s album Straight Outta Compton is considered one of the influential records in rap. He became a solo artist afterward while moving into film, acting in movies such as Boyz n the Hood, Three Kings and the Barbershop series of comedies.

Also on the bill are American rapper Xzibit and Canadian artist DJ Kav.

RCMP search for man after gunshots in Bloodvein

Bloodvein RCMP are searching for a man accused of firing shots at at least two homes early Tuesday.

Mounties warned residents in a social-media post Tuesday morning to stay indoors while officers search for the suspect.

RCMP said Tuesday afternoon that the local detachment was called with a report of shots fired at a home just after 1 a.m. It was also reported that the same suspect went to another home and fired more gunshots before fleeing.

No one was hurt in either shooting, RCMP said. Officers patrolled the community and could not immediately find the suspect. Mounties said in the afternoon that emergency response officers, police dogs and drones were later involved in the manhunt.

Byron Duck, 31, is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large for violating conditions of a release order. He’s 5-9 in height and about 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Mounties warned that Duck should be considered armed and dangerous and shouldn’t be approached.
